Barbara Meer Atlas, age 91, passed away on Monday, June 24. She was a lifelong resident of Birmingham and was the loving wife of the late Dr. Harry Atlas. Barbara was preceded in death by her son Joel Atlas, brothers Samuel and Bernard Meer and sister Ruth Feldman. Barbara is survived by her son Dr. Alvin (Jill) Atlas and sister Sylvia Hirshberg of Keene, NH. Barbara met her husband Harry at a B'nai Brith Youth Organization function in 1949, and they married in 1950. Barbara was a lifelong member of Knesseth Israel Congregation. She was a Hebrew and Kindergarten teacher at Temple Beth-El and Knesseth Israel, and was the first Hebrew teacher at the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School. Her passion was teaching and she loved her many students for 50 years until retirement. Barbara was a member and head of the Chevra Kadisha for many years. In Barbara's later years she was a participant in Collat Jewish Family Services' CARES Respite Program, a group for those with memory disorders. She enjoyed this program for several years offering her music and art therapy, inter-generational programming, and service projects. Barbara's motto in life was "if you live long enough, you see everything." The family would like to thank caregivers from Home Instead with special thanks to Merlena Bates and Yolanda Kemp, along with caregiver and friend Bill Smith. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 26 at 11:00 am at Northside Cemetery, 320 11th Ct N. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Collat Jewish Family Services or the N.E. Miles Jewish Day School.
