The Honorable Allwin Earl Horn, III, (“Al)” passed away on September 18, 2019, at the age of 75. Judge Horn was a resident of Mountain Brook, Alabama. Judge Horn was born April 7, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Ola Mae McLemore Horn and Allwin Earl Horn, Jr. He was married to Carolyn Baldwin Horn, his high school sweetheart, for 56 years. He attended West End High School and The University of Alabama where he received a B.S. in Business, and a Juris Doctor degree. In 1968, he began service in the Army Reserve, and served therein until 1974. He was a partner with the Spain Gillon law firm from 1969 until 1996 when he was appointed to the Jefferson County Circuit Court. He served on the Court until his retirement in 2009. He was a member of the Birmingham Bar Association and the Alabama State Bar. He finished his legal career serving as Of Counsel with his son at the law firm of Hollis, Wright, Clay and Vail. Judge Horn was an avid reader, and loved to play golf (and Dominoes) with his friends at the Hoover Country Club. He enjoyed spending time in Orange Beach, Alabama, with his family. He never missed an Alabama football game. Judge Horn is survived by his wife, Carolyn Horn, and their two children, Ivey Horn Brown (Jeff) and Allwin E. Horn, IV (Casey), and his brother, Edwin W. Horn (“Peanut”). Judge and Mrs. Horn have five grandchildren: Frances Murray Brown (20), Katherine Crockett Brown (18), Allwin Earl Horn, V (“Win”) (17), Mary Gaston Brown (16) and Carson Paige Horn (15), all of Mountain Brook. He is also survived by his beloved cocker spaniel, Beau. A private graveside burial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 22nd, 2019, at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
