after a courageous battle with cancer. He is predeceased by his parents Dr. Horace and
Francis Watson, of Nashville, TN. Alan is survived by Nancy, his wife of 42 years and high
school sweetheart; son Drew (Rachel), daughters Laraine (Mark), Leah; sisters Annette
Garrison (Bill), Susan Richards (Fred); brother Dr. Mark Watson (Sally) and his grandson,
Andrew and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born on December 28, 1956, Alan graduated from Mountain Brook High School and the
University of Alabama. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity.
Prior to opening Wealth Designs, LLC, Alan spent the majority of his career with Protective Life
Insurance Co, serving as Senior VP Life & Annuity Division, Protective Producers Association
President & Board Member, First Protective Board Member, Pro Equities Board of Directors. His
career included Director of Agencies at John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance (Boston) and North
American Company for Life & Health as Sr VP of National Accounts. In addition, he was
appointed the inaugural President of the Critical Illness Association and Board Member of
LIMRA, International and was a Lifetime Member of the Million Dollar Roundtable. Alan most
enjoyed using his knowledge and energies encouraging and mentoring hundreds of general
agents, sales managers and producers and valued these friendships throughout his life.
Charitable affiliations include Metropolitan Arts Council Chairman, Red Mountain Theatre Board
President, Opera Birmingham Board Member, Virginia Samford Theatre Board Member, Alabama Hunter Jumper Association Board Member, United Way Red Feather Society and Covenant Society, and the Capstone Legacy Society at The University of Alabama.
Hunting, fishing, hiking, golf, traveling, water sports, lake and beach times with Nancy and
family fulfilled Alan’s love of the outdoors; his teams were Atlanta Braves Baseball and Alabama
Basketball, Football and Womens Softball. However, he was the ultimate fan for any activity his
children became involved with including Saturday horse shows, Theatre performances and
Operas.
Alan was a member of The Country Club of Birmingham, The Club and Mountain Brook Baptist
Church. He was most recently affiliated with Canterbury United Methodist Church.
A Private Memorial Service is planned. In lieu of flowers, Alan selected Make-A-Wish
Foundation for memorials. In latter years, he held their works close to his heart.
