Harold Benjamin Harris, of Oviedo, FL, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016 at the Life Care Center of Citrus County, Lecanto, FL. On behalf of Harold and his family, we express our heartfelt gratitude for the loving care he received from all the staff during his 8 month residence there, particularly Chris, Cindy, Conan, Fran, Gloria, Kendra, Michael, and Valerie.
Harold was born on May 1, 1937, the son of Phillip A. and Harriet R. (Sommers) Harris in Chicago, IL, who preceded him in death. Surviving are two brothers: Edward D. Harris (wife: Janet) of College Station, TX and Lynn D. Harris (wife: Christine) of Austin, TX; and a sister Judith A. Janiewicz (husband: George) of Beverly Hills, FL. He is also survived by his loving children: two sons, Philip M. Harris (wife: Colleen) of San Diego, CA, and David M. Harris (wife: Lisa) of Kittery, ME, and a daughter Lynne M. Heinzmann (husband: Christopher) of North Kingstown, RI, all of whom enjoyed spending Harold’s recent birthday with him. His seven grandchildren are: Megan, Mitchell, Andrew, and Olivia Harris; Julia and Laura Heinzmann; and Isabella Harris.
Harold was a Registered Mechanical Engineer and, after serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1960s, worked for many years in the electrical power industry at various locations throughout the United States. In the early 2000s he moved from Massachusetts to Florida to take a position at an engineering consulting firm. Harold enjoyed James Bond movies, singing, and was a life-time fan of the Chicago sports teams. Until his move to Life Care Center, he was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Oviedo where he served as an usher. He will be missed by his family, especially his loving sister Judy whose tireless devotion sustained him during his final illness.
A Memorial Service is planned for June 18, 2016 at 2 p.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church of Crystal River, FL. Should friends desire, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent in Harold’s name to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
