Ed was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Lucy (Taiber) and Francis A. Cunningham. He graduated from Freeport High School, Freeport, NY where he excelled in Football and Track and actively participated in the Rifle and Chess clubs. He earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Delaware. At Delaware he continued with football and threw shotput and discus for the Track team while also being the Captain of the Rifle Team. He made lifelong friends at Theta Chi Fraternity where he was the Treasurer. He graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in Business.
Post college, he proudly served his country in the military for two years, training in Texas and then being stationed in Montauk, NY and Fort Lee, NJ. He was active in the American Legion for many years in Baldwin, NY.
He worked at AT&T Technologies (formerly Western Electric) for 34 years, commuting to New York City for 25 of those years and finishing in New Jersey. He ascended to Assistant Treasurer before retiring in 1990.
He married the love of his life, Evelyn Beresniewicz, on October 20, 1956. They lived in Baldwin, Long Island, NY after they were first married. In 1972 they moved to Chatham Township, NJ and then settled in Beverly Hills Florida in 1992.
Ed and Evelyn owned a condominium in Ocean City, Maryland that they enjoyed every summer for 39 years. Their entire family loved spending time at “the condo”, going to the beach, crabbing, swimming in the pool, enjoying the view from the balcony, and engaging in many extremely competitive games of dominos! Ed loved to sit on the balcony reading his books and drinking his decaffeinated coffee (he loved his coffee!).
In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his son Thomas (Cathy) Cunningham, his daughters Nancy (Thomas) Meininger & Sandra Clemency and his son Robert (Kathy) Cunningham, 12 grandchildren; Michael Cunningham, Thomas Meininger, Jr., Jackie Jones, Daniel Meininger, Nicole Clemency, Stephen Cunningham, Megan Haynes, Samantha Cunningham, Jake Cunningham, Ryan Cunningham, Lauren Cunningham and Scott Cunningham; and 7 great grandchildren, Wolfgang Meininger, Garrett Shaver, Zoryana Meininger, Ethan Jones, Foxleigh Meininger, Kodiak Meininger and Holly Haynes.
