Oklahoma City resident, John Butler Brightwell passed away Friday, May 12, 2023. John was born December 3, 1931 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to John and Gady (French) Brightwell. He grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from Central High School. He married Janice Ann Hamilton April 23, 1952 and together they raised four children. He enjoyed being a Husband, Father, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa. After his marriage, he went into service with the Navy. Then after graduating from Oklahoma State University, he spent his professional years as a teacher of math for high school. During that time, John and Janice built a real estate business. In the summers John enjoyed taking his family on vacations to Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Also, many summers, John and his family would join his aunt in a traveling carnival show. John’s hobbies included playing the guitar, singing, traveling in his RV, baseball, and carpentry. He continued to use his math skills to tutor his family throughout his life. John was kind to and loved animals. The Brightwells had many family pets including Frosty and Lady. John was preceded in death by his parents; his son Robert Brightwell; his sister Olivia (Marie) and son Mark; and three sisters-in-law, June Wallace, Jean Meyer, and Joan Thomason. He is survived by, his children, John Edward Brightwell, Brenda Brightwell, and Sharon Odom; seven grandchildren, Christina Brightwell Thompson, Siobhan Frow, Michael Brightwell, Lauren Nowell, and Brian Lawson; Chad Odom and Danielle Mesigh; 17 great grandchildren, Kiernan Brightwell, Rowan and Bert Thompson; Fin, Nepeta, Michael, and Fletcher Frow; Madyson Brightwell and MaKayla Pesina; Eleanor, Frederic, and Florence Mesigh; Hadley, Carson, Hudson, and Harvey Nowell; and Samantha Lawson.
Services will be 2 pm Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Bill Merritt Memorial Chapel, 6201 NW 39th Expressway, Bethany Oklahoma, 73008
