Born to Robert and Pauline Berns January 13, 1943 in Churdan, Iowa passed into his eternal life April 8, 2025. Raised on a farm while attending school in Lohrville and Churdan. Dan was gifted as an athlete once being recognized by the Des Moines Register as “Prep of the Week”. After graduation in 1961 he served in the United States Marine Corps stationed in Japan and The Naval Shipyard San Francisco. He was awarded the Navy Commendation for heroic action during the 1964 All Hallows Church fire in San Francisco. Dan suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns while saving a fellow Marine in a fire that took 17 lives and injured 100. Dan was a cancer survivor having endured surgeries, aggressive radiation and chemotherapy.
Dan worked several jobs until starting his own sales distribution company in 1975 and worked as an entrepreneur in sales of music and sports products until 2020.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived and mourned by his daughters Cassidy Berns and husband Tom Corbin of Bethany, OK, Brittani Berns of Bethany, OK, Kenzie Berns and husband Elliot Westerman of Holloman AFB, NM; Grandchildren Madison "Pumpkin" Berns, Bryson Corbin, Aaron Corbin, Sarah Corbin, Rilynn Berns, Emory Berns, Ivan Westerman, Abigail Westerman; Brothers and sister-in-law’s W. Robert and Arlene Berns of Jefferson, IA, Stanley and Diane Berns of Shawnee, OK, Mark and Trish Berns of Abilene, KS; Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, longtime friend Buzzy, Adam, Tasha and countless friends including the incredible community at Southern Plaza Assisted Living in Bethany.
While Dan loved to watch various sports, the OKC Thunder were his favorite and he ensured to call out fouls that were missed in each game. He also enjoyed talking about politics any time the opportunity arose. Dan will be remembered as a loving Father, Grandfather, Brother and Friend. He cared deeply for others, his Country and embodied the Marine Corps values and spirit. Semper Fi.
