He is survived by three sons and their wives along with 8 grandchildren: John Moore and wife Natasha of Fayetteville, AR and his children Rhyan and Heather; Ed Moore and wife Jill of Arlington, TX and his children Krista, Erin and Katie and BJ Moore and wife Becky of Chatham, IL and their children Jacob, Joshua and Isabella.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Alice Carole Moore, his parents and ten siblings. Carole supported Bill in every aspect of his life, whether it was transferring from Marine bases across the country, raising their three sons, volunteering at the political polls together, traveling to visit family, taking care of their Pomeranian Freddy, or running errands to the hardware stores for his building activities.
Bill served honorably in the United States Marine Corp for 30 years + 30 days. Those that knew Bill understood that serving as a Marine defined much of Bill’s life. He was part of a nuclear testing team in Nevada early in his career, served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was deployed numerous times to Vietnam as well as the Middle East, Okinawa, West Pac and South Korea. Bill worked his way up the ranks to Master Gunnery Sergeant and retired as a Division Com Chief in 1986.
After his retirement, Bill enjoyed spending time with his family especially watching his son BJ play soccer. Bill coached the Fayetteville High School Bulldog Soccer Club from 1986 – 1990 and even wrote a comprehensive soccer manual. Bill loved reading, watching Hallmark Christmas specials and children’s classic movies, dining at the Golden Coral, drinking coffee with his buddies and talking… talking… talking!
Bill was also an avid sports fan especially cheering on the Arkansas Razorbacks, St. Louis Cardinals and was a lifelong New York Yankees fan. “How about them Yankees?” An avid reader, Bill enjoyed history, especially military history, the history of the Bible and studied politics relentlessly. He enjoyed emailing a daily political view for family and friends, typically posted by 5 am.
Some of Bill’s favorite sayings were: “Semper Fi”, “Yeah Buddy”, “If I get in a wreck, it’ll be an accident” and “If your bored sometime, look it up”.
It's no coincidence that Bill’s memorial service will be held on the Marine Corps’ birthday, Thursday, November 10, 10:00 am at the Elm Springs Assembly of God, 394 Elm Springs Road, Elm Springs, AR 72728 and will be officiated by his long-time friend, Jerry Boatright.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Innovation Autism, 3700 Cranleigh Blvd., Springfield, IL 62712, in support of his grandson, Jake, who he was close to, St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. stjude.org or Shriners International, shrinersinternational.org.
