Susan Elizabeth Babylon was born in April of 1949 in Bonne Terre, Missouri to her proud parents, Robert and Bettye Babylon. She grew up in Independence, Missouri at their family farmhouse. She was daughter number three, of six beautiful girls. Susan loved her family, the farm garden, and her animals, especially the horses and dogs. She graduated from Truman High School in 1967.
Susan went to work for Western Electric and retired thirty plus years later from the same company, later renamed Lucent Technologies. She was ambitious and hard-working. She took every opportunity to advance, studied diligently and aced nearly impossible exams on her first attempt. She progressed from being a Machine Operator, then Assembler, started with handling the wiring & testing, and eventually earned the title of a Programmer.
Luckily, Susan found her partner, Phyllis Whitt, early on and they were able to spend forty-five years side by side. They built a beautiful life together. Building not only memories but their own oasis. They built their own home from the ground up, painstakingly picked every detail, assisted in the build, decorated every space with love, and created a landscape to be envied by all. The home was more than a home and as pristine as the lawn was, it was the love that lived inside and radiated throughout that was a refuge for all who were lucky enough to call her Aunt Susan.
Susan didn’t just walk; she chose to fly. She was never the kind of person to sit still, she loved to play golf, take photos, take care of her home and lawn and all those she loved. Susan was kind, she was helpful, diligent, and the person you would absolutely want to team up with if you were going to play a round of golf. Seriously. She and Phyllis organized the Teetering Rocks Ladies Golf Club. They played in many tournaments including a PGA Golf tournament in Florida. Susan loved to travel, she loved to fish and swim in the lake, she loved helping to teach others how to ski. She enjoyed a round of golf as often as possible. Susan took the task of keeping the family memories, taking the time to preserve millions of magical moments from the big family occasion to simple everyday life. She left this beautiful gift for us to see ourselves shining back at her through her loving camera lens. She will forever be known as the “One-eyed Aunt” for how she documented every special moment in our lives, a testament of her love. Her pictures were beautiful because she was beautiful. Susan was also a fighter. She fought against snakes in her yard, she fought against weeds that didn’t belong in her driveway, and she fought for those she loved.
Susan was hard-working, and always committed to family. As the years went by, the number of nieces and nephews that she loved and spoiled increased, but the lessons Susan taught remained. Be good to your family. Work hard. Be honest, and make sure to tell those that you love “I love you.”
Susan was welcomed home by her parents, brothers-in-law, nephew, and cherished friends, in the early morning hours of October 21st, 2023. She leaves behind her Partner Phyllis Whitt, Sisters; Patricia Harves (Ray), Janet Fain, Pamela Gulick, Trudy Arnold (Loyd), Janelle Caulkins (Don) many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends that will miss her dearly. As Susan leaves this world, those that remain will never lose her. She will accompany us. She will always be a part of us, even if we cannot see her.
“There are some who bring a light so great to the world, that even after they have gone, the light remains.”
A visitation and celebration gathering for Susan will be held Thursday, October 26, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at McGilley & George Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 611 Chestnut, Belton, MO 64012.
