Selby Benton Nelson, 83, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on December 4th, 2019 at Beautiful Savior nursing home in Belton, Missouri. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dixie Nelson, a daughter, Sonya Pilley, son-in-law Seth Pilley, and three grandchildren, Samuel, Katherine, and Sophia Pilley, and his sister, Pansy Bingham of Springfield, MO.
Selby was born in Hickory county on October 7, 1936 to Estella and Theodore Nelson. Selby has one sister, Pansy Bingham and a twin brother, Shelby Nelson, who passed away at birth. Selby marred Dixie McKinley in 1959, in Belton. Together they had one daughter, Sonya Leigh. He was a hard worker. Selby served in the National Guard for eight years. He worked at the Bendix plant and was hired at the railroad where he worked for the majority of his life. He loved trains and working on trains. He had an extensive train collection. After retirement Selby worked for O’Reilly, which combined his love of cars with his love of driving.
Selby loved going to the “farm” in Greenwood, MO that he and Dixie owned. He loved anything that took him outdoors. He would mow, bale hay, plant a garden, and work on his tractor. He and Dixie also had a “lake house”. They both enjoyed getting away from the city and even owned a boat. Selby loved to tell jokes. The cornier the better. He had a picture of a bottle of Pride and Joy and would ask people if they would like to see his pride and joy. Both Selby and Dixie loved to travel. They were lucky enough to travel all around Europe and the United States, including Hawaii. Selby was a compassionate man who would do anything for anyone. If you mentioned you needed help with something, he would be there.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 18th, from 6:00-8:00pm at McGilley and George in Grandview, 12913 Grandview Rd, Grandview, MO. There will not be a service. In lieu of flowers, think about making a donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, pancan.org.
