Douglas Karl Schmidt, passed away suddenly on March 13, 2024 at his home in Belton, Missouri. He was the son of Jeannine Anna (Olchowy), and Karl Heinz Schmidt, and was born October 14, 1958 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
His father was in the US Air Force, so Douglas lived in many places and graduated from Kaiserslautern High School in Germany in 1977. He returned to the United States and moved to Belton, MO with his family in 1977. He got his Bachelor of Science degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO in 1982. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. He moved to Fort Worth, TX in 1983 after accepting a position as a hospital administrator. While in Fort Worth, he met and married his Ex-wife Sherry Lewis (nee Bradford), currently living in Shirley, Arkansas. They had a son Karl Anthony born in 1985. Douglas also held the position of hospital administrator in New Bern, NC and Amarillo, TX. Douglas returned to the Kansas City area in 1994 and held several different jobs over the years including working at Harrah’s Casino and Director of Housekeeping at KU Med Center.
Douglas loved building model airplanes and fishing with his son. He was also an avid reader. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Belton. He loved animals and frequently brought dogs and cats home with him. He was also a coach for his son’s little league baseball team.
He was preceded in heaven by his mother and father. He is survived by his sister Ruby Schmidt and brother Michael Schmidt, his son Anthony Schmidt, daughter in-law Samantha Cress, grandsons Liam Schmidt and Karl Everett Schmidt and step grandchildren, Landen Rhodes and Evalyn Rhodes, all of Belton, MO. He was still very close to his ex-brother in-law Wade Bradford who resides in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Douglas was a deeply beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend. His passing was sudden and unexpected and has left a hole in his family that will never be filled. He is greatly missed.
There will be a visitation at McGilley & George Funeral Home 611 Chestnut on Tuesday, March 19 from 5-7 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Sabina Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 20 at noon with burial to follow in the Belton Cemetery.
