Sharon was born in Iowa to Nick and Ella Smits on October 26, 1940. Her parents were both Dutch. She moved to Bellflower, California as a young child. She attended Valley Christian High school where she was very social and made many life-long friends who gave her the nickname “Smitty.”
She married Donnelly Urton on August 5, 1960. They moved to Oregon in 1969. He preceded her in death in 1985 and she returned to Bellflower in 1988 where she remained for the rest of her life. Don and Sharon had 4 children: Dawn Harrigan (Kevin), Darla Urton, Dana Hindman, and Darren Urton (Michelle). There are 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren left to carry on her memory. She has one surviving brother, Tony Smits (Nona). Her parents and her brother Marvin all passed previously.
Sharon was a devout Christian and loved her Lord! She is surely singing his praises in heaven. She loved to listen to the Gaither Brothers sing hymns. She was a member of Rosewood Church and a member of the Christian Reformed faith her entire life.
Sharon loved to garden almost as much as she loved the Lord and her family. She grew great gardens through the years. She was known for her beautiful African violets, roses, calla lilies, amaryllis, and irises to name just a few. She also made amazing pies. Her family will miss her delicious chocolate cream pie! And we will carry on the Christmas cookie tradition we all loved so much.
Sharon passed away peacefully the morning of June 6, 2023 at the Artesia Christian home where she had lived the last two years. We are grateful to the staff there for their wonderful care these last few months as her health declined.
Thank you all for joining us in this celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her name to Artesia Christian Home or your favorite charity is suggested.
"O LORD, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at last. Amen."
