Sadie Negen, aged 95, was the third of six children born to Tillie Bouma and Jacob Hanenburg on April 21, 1928 in Bogus Creek, Minnesota. She was raised in Pease, MN, and spoke often of her life on a small dairy farm. After high school, she attended Calvin College and earned a certificate in teaching. While there, she met and married Donald Negen on August 17, 1951, and supported him by teaching first grade while he completed seminary.
Don and Sadie together served churches in Imlay City, MI; Holland, MI; Lynden, WA; Bellflower, CA; Lombard, IL; and Monroe, WA. Sadie took her job as a Pastor’s wife seriously and was a gracious hostess with coffee and goodies always ready for any guests.
Don and Sadie were blessed with four children: Thomas, Marcia, Barbara and Gerald, and they provided a happy and loving home. Later, they warmly welcomed their children’s spouses and eleven Grandchildren. After Don’s death in 1990, Sadie stayed in WA for a few years before returning to Bellflower. She was further blessed by 13 Great-grandchildren.
Once back in Bellflower, Sadie was active at Rosewood as an organized and capable leader for the tutoring program. She was also a faithful member of a widows’ prayer group, which met weekly to pray specifically for the Rosewood youth. After moving to Assisted Living at Artesia Christian Home in 2016, Sadie was known as a Prayer Warrior, joining with some staff and other residents regularly to pray for the Administration and other needs. We know she prayed regularly for every member in our family.
Sadie is remembered for being a gentle and kind lady, with a good sense of humor and loving nature. Toward the end of her life, Sadie often spoke of going “Home”, and she passed away peacefully on December 28, 2023. We will really miss her.
