Carolyn was born August 2, 1941 to Ray and Ada VanderBy in Artesia, California. She passed away February 16, 2012 in Long Beach, California after a decade long battle with cancer. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Carolyn is survived by her husband of 46 years, Tom; her sons and grandchildren Ed and Amy (Charlie and Sadie) and Brian and Lyn; her sister Marguerite and Andrew Balkema; and her twin brother John and Sandie VanderBy; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Carolyn graduated from Valley Christian and Calvin College earning a BA in education. After finishing her degree, she moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and taught Kindergarten and music. While in Sheboygan, she met Tom. After two years in Wisconsin, she returned to California teaching third grade at Artesia Christian School. During this time, Tom also moved to California and they were married. After starting her family, she left full time teaching and began subbing in the local Christian schools. Later, she returned to teaching full time at Beverly Christian School in East LA and later Bellflower Christian. Throughout this time, she taught piano to many children. In addition, Carolyn was also actively involved in the music ministry of various southern California churches. She played the organ and piano, led children and adult choirs, and directed many musical programs.
In addition to her work, Carolyn had many hobbies and interests. She was involved in many Bible studies and cherished the friendships that developed during their time together. Carolyn loved sports (namely the Dodgers and Lakers). She enjoyed being outside, particularly gardening in her yard and walking. She and Tom travelled often. We all remember her with a smile on her face, a coffee cup in her hand and a sparkle in her eyes just waiting for a laugh.
