Sally was born Nov. 18, 1923, daughter of James and Catherine Gilmour, sisters Betty and Kate. This was a Catholic family. She attended Catholic grade school and graduated from Holy Names Academy. Soon after, while working as a roller skating car hop in the Greenwood area, she served and fell in love with William ("Bill") A. De La Vergne. They married, and for close to fifty years they experienced their lives from the home they built in the Seward Park area. This included three children - Linda, Mike, and Steven.
Cancer took her Bill at 70 years old. During this sad ordeal she spent with appointments and hospital visits, she shared hours, days, and weeks in waiting rooms with another who's lifelong spouse was being taken by the disease. As fate would have it, George Riley Curry and Sally were to marry each other. For close to 20 additional years, they enriched each other's lives and our families (including Riley’s 7 children – Victoria, Daniel, Timothy, Patrick, Michael, Matthew and Peter) with more joyful experiences.
Riley was taken by illness at 93 years old. Sally had more to give us. For another decade plus, she did just that. At Providence Mount St. Vincent in West Seattle, she received the most loving and compassionate care. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank them, their mission and their effects.
On Oct. 13, 2023, 35 days short of 100 years old, she gave herself back to her God.
She was so many things. A teacher of values, a generous volunteer, devout in her faith, loving spouse, homemaker, crossword puzzle whiz, traveler, nurturer, ignorer of youthful indiscretions (Mike and Steve), taxi service, painter, manager of schedules, coupon clipper/bargain hunter & lover of cats.
She taught us tolerance, acceptance, compassion & empathy. She loved all her sisters and in-laws and their children and her children and grandchildren and Riley's children. Her family was all she wanted or needed. She loved us all so much.
She also taught us humor. She did not take life too seriously. The hardest laughter we ever experienced from Sally was when she was laughing at herself. So, mom, a reminder as you venture off to view heaven for the first time and you are looking around for where the heck you put your eyeglasses, let us remind you one last time . . . they are hanging from your neck!
