From the Family: Patty's Life Story Part 3

After finishing 8th grade at St Joseph’s, Patty was enrolled at Marycliff High School where she would finish her school day and pick up Fran from school and go home. No more St Joseph’s.

After graduation, Patty got a job with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. in the Install Dept. While working there she was set up on a blind date with the brother of a co-worker. The brother, Frank Schroeder, picked Patty up and escorted her to the Company dance. The rest is history as they say. They were married in 1951 and had 5 children in Spokane before they relocated to Bellevue in 1967 for Frank’s work. It was very important to both Patty and Frank the children had a parent to come home to at the end of a day.

There were fun years of golf, bowling, games of all sorts and the Seahawks before Frank’s passing in 1990 at the age of 63. Patty enjoyed sporting events with family right until the end, still quoting stats on her favorite players and cheering loudly.

Patty loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She set a wonderful example of unconditional love and kindness just as her Momma before her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

St Joseph’s is also where Patty began her love of bacon! The children had chores assigned to them based on age and Patty was assigned to bring breakfast plates to the Priests. Sometimes their delivered plates were a tad less full than when they left the kitchen. In her telling of the story, she marveled at the grace bestowed on her as she knew they must have known.

Patty and Fran were 2 1/2 years apart so they were in different groups at St. Joseph’s and so didn’t see each other all the time. One time, Patty got sick and was not going to be able to go home on the weekend. Such was their love for each other, Fran snuck into the infirmary and crawled into bed with Patty to get sick so they would be together.

Patricia was born 11/2/1930 in Spokane to Mary Ellen and Allen Holroyd. The Great Depression was a difficult time. Patty and her sister Fran spent their early years living at St Joseph’s Orphanage. Their Momma needed to work downtown and there was no one able to care for them. They had school with the Sisters during the week and spent some weekends with their Momma and Sunday dinner with their Daddy’s family. The time she spent with her Momma was her most cherished time and she soaked up the love to last until the next visit.

The family didn’t own a car so they walked or took buses everywhere they went. Patty showed incredible resilience in spending almost her entire life walking on radiation damaged feet.  As a young girl, cheerfully going on playing and dancing. Later as a Mother, carrying and chasing after children and taking care of home. Never complaining.
