Mel was a professional baseball player for the NY Yankees from 1964 to 1974. His coaching career included 1984-1993 for the NY Mets, 1994-1995 for the Houston Astros, 1996-2005 for the NY Yankees and 2008 for the Seattle Mariners. Mel was a five-time MLB All Star, and a five-time World Series Champion as a coach. In 2015, the Yankees dedicated a plaque in Monument Park in Mel’s honor.
Mel was a longtime resident of Sammamish, Washington. He loved hunting and fishing and especially loved time with his grandkids.
Mel is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jean; sons, Mel, Jr. (Lisa) and Todd (Erica); his brother, Jeff (Ellen); sister, Joyce; and 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jason and his brother, Keith.
A Funeral Service will be held for Mel on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 1:00pm at Sunset Hills Funeral Home 1215 145th Place SE, Bellevue, WA 98007.
