September 12, 1918- August 9, 2010
Margaret was born in Farnam, Nebraska to Loren and Helen Fitch. She, along with her younger siblings, Mary and John, were introduced to their mother Helen’s musical talents at a young age. Margaret’s inherited talents, honed at Juliard College, rose her to concert pianist level.
Margaret married Albert Boley just before he went off to serve in WWII. Upon his return they moved to Seattle , Washington. Later, Margaret single-handedly raised her four children, often working multiple jobs to provide for the family.
Margaret was insistent on getting outdoors with her children to relax. Many white knuckle drives were made in snow storms to hit the ski slopes. Yearly car camping vacations often resulted in epic family stories of escape from misfortune. These adventures formed a lasting impression on us all for an appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors.
Years later, Margaret met and fell in love with John Hogness, former President of the University of Washington. Together they built a life mostly spent in the Methow Valley near Winthrop, Washington. When they weren’t active with local conservation, musical, and theater interests, they enjoyed time with their grandchildren, Aaron, Loren, Trevor and Tate Boley. Traveling abroad and enjoying their friends in Seattle and Winthrop filled any remaining time.
In 2002, Margaret suffered a stroke while in their Mazama cabin, requiring them to move into University House in Seattle. John passed away in 2007 and mother spent her remaining life under the loving care of Magnolia House.
Margaret is survived by her sister, Mary Stevenson, and her children, Peg, Tyler, Tom and Terry Boley; and John’s children, Rusten, Suze Rutherford, Karen, Dave and Jody Hazen. All those who loved her will always remember her love and talent for music, courage and resourcefulness in single parenting, and passion for adventure with John and family.
