James W. Pharr Jr. was born to the late James W Pharr Sr. and Eliza Gray Pharr in New Orleans, LA on October 6, 1936. He moved with his family to Bremerton WA at the age of 6. There he graduated from Bremerton High School. During his High School years James was an avid sportsman playing football and basketball. He received many awards for his sports abilities and was recently inducted into the Bremerton High School Sports Hall of Fame. He continued his education at Olympic College and Western Washington University with a degree in Civil Engineering.
James served in the US Army Reserves. He worked as a civil engineer with the Corps of Engineers and later with King County Department of Transportation where he retired.
James was very active with the National Association of the Church of God Ushers and Men’s auxiliary serving in many positions. He was also active in his local congregation. In 2001, The National Mens Association recognized him as man of the year. James and his wife were honored in 2007 by the NAGOC with the Esther B. Culp Distinguished Service Award in Servanthood & Leadership.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory Laura, his wife of 40 years; daughters Veronica (Kenneth) and Jaime (Paddy); grandchildren Devon and Kiera; sisters Ruby, Eliza (Dee) and Hilda; God-children; God-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins and friends.
The loved ones that preceded James in death were James W. Pharr Sr. (father), Margarette Pharr-Bosley (sister), Mary Pharr-Taylor (sister), Eliza G. Pharr (mother), Patricia A. Francis (sister) and Calvin Pharr (brother).
