Crispin Adam Scott, 20, was a junior at Dartmouth College, where he majored in mathematics with additional interest in computer science and international studies. He was a member of the Dartmouth Rugby Club and Phi Delta Alpha fraternity. He was in Spain on a study abroad program to extend his Spanish language skills and study Spanish culture and the European monetary system. He died January 7, 2012, in Spain.
Crispin was born in Tokyo where his father worked for a U.S. company. He attended the American School in Japan through 7th grade. He studied Aikido for 6 years, attended a Japanese ski camp, and played the Japanese koto. Crispin was a member of the Komaba Kendo Club and in 2003 participated with his teammates in the Greater Kanto Kendo Tournament. He was fluent in Japanese.
When his family returned to the U.S., Crispin entered the University Preparatory Academy in Seattle, where he was on the Scholar’s List every term and graduated with honors. He studied cryptology with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program one summer, participated in the U Prep Global Link Program in Samoa, was on the tennis team, and, with 2 friends, set up a writing center in his senior year to assist students with writing papers. His graduation thesis was on the U.S. bailout of the auto industry.
In 9th grade, his Spanish language teacher noticed he was taking his notes in Japanese katakana. At her suggestion, he took the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, a standardized examination administered by the Japan Foundation, and passed the highest level. He returned to Japan as an American Field Service exchange student for 6 months during his junior year, where he lived on a farm with a host family and attended Ibaraki Christian Academy. He was their first exchange student to attend regular academic classes and was a member of the school kendo club.
Crispin worked as a lifeguard at the Mercer Island Beach Club for 3 summers and as an intern at Revenue Management Systems in Seattle in spring 2011, where he was able to combine his interests in math and computer sciences. Initially assigned to review the state of forecasting and price elasticity modeling in the airline industry, Crispin taught himself c# programming and built forecasting and price elasticity models that were incorporated into the company's mainline product.
He participated in Mercer Island recreational soccer and was an avid skier, a love he shared with his older brother. He enjoyed hiking and camping with friends in the Pacific Northwest, was an intrepid cook, and was known to be an enthusiastic, but terrible, singer. Crispin's wonderful laugh, his zest for new challenges, and his love for his friends of all ages and family will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Crispin is survived by his brother Robert, parents Norman and Patricia; Grandmother Marion McDonald, Aunt Barbara McDonald and cousins Genaro and Joseph Scavello in Philadelphia; Aunt Jeanette and Uncle Craigie Mackie and cousins Scott Mackie and Corinne Reid in Peterhead, Scotland; and his dear girlfriend Marisa Fang in Seattle.
A memorial service will be held on June 16 at 10:30 at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dartmouth College which he so loved: The Crispin A. Scott Memorial Fund, Gift Recording Office, Dartmouth College, 6066 Development Office, Hanover NH 03775.
Sunset Hills Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
