Carl Henry Wittenberg of Bellevue, WA, passed away on January 9, 2023, at the age of 92. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, where he attended Menlo College. After serving with distinction in the US Navy, Carl graduated from Pomona College and passed his CPA exam on the first attempt, setting a standard for personal excellence that would persist throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Jean Wittenberg, his younger brother Eric (Cynthia), his second wife Gail, and stepson David Giller. He is survived by his children’s mother Barbara (Erwin) Wimmer, son John (Jennifer) Wittenberg, daughter Carolyn Mathews, and son Craig (Gretchen) Wittenberg; his stepchildren Bill (Lisa) Ranniger, Dan (Ann) Ranniger, Sidnie (Tom) Seward, Mike (Marre) Giller, and Susan Giller; and by his wife Myra. He also leaves behind seventeen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Carl played basketball in high school, in college, and for the Navy. In recognition of his talent – and his speed – his friends dubbed him the “Beverly Hills Flash”. In 1947 he appeared in RKO’s hit comedy The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer as an extra playing basketball, but in real life his starring roles were those of beloved husband, friend, and father. He supported the Seahawks, Mariners, Huskies, Cougars, and Sonics.
Carl was laid to rest at Sunset Hills Cemetery on January 13, 2023. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his honor to a charity of your choice.
