Shayla was born April 25, 2003 to Charles and Laurene (Thelen) Campbell in Panama City Beach, Florida. They survive her and reside in Belleville, IL.
Also surviving are her siblings Jade (Campbell) and Kyle Tapley of Savannah, GA, Tiffany (Campbell) and Nathan Buck of Knoxville, TN, Sean Campbell of Belleville, IL, Eileen Campbell and Austin Mauser of Belleville, IL; nieces and nephews Jonathan, Maddox, Ava, Declan, Scarlett, Amelia, Isaak, Azeria, and Waverly; maternal Grandpa, Daniel Thelen of Belleville, IL and paternal Mamaw, Helen Campbell of Benton, LA. She is also survived by their large extended family and friends who cared for her deeply. She leaves behind her crazy cat, Paul, whom she loved as her own child.
She was preceded in death by her maternal Grandmother, Marian F. Thelen, paternal Grandfather, Harley Campbell, uncle, Rik Roffler, and cousin, Matthew Thelen.
Shayla's truest passions were human and animal rights, many times dreaming of a future in politics, and Camp Ondessonk (specifically the barn), where they felt the most at home, accepted, and free.
Shayla was beyond talented. She could always be found artistically expressing herself through sketching, loud creative makeup, quirky fashion, and singing. Shayla was a beautiful balance of reserved and sweet while also being vibrant and outspoken. She was cautious yet fearless, beyond spunky, and unapologetically herself. Shayla had a strong moral compass and always stood 10 toes down for what they believed in while holding space for others to do the same. She understood that to love was to accept others for who they are, no matter their differences. She always underestimated the magnitude of the impact they made on others and the level for which others cared for her. She found joy and beauty in what others would find to be creepy or uncomfortable. She took great pride in knowing that she was an “odd” soul. Though Shayla spent many years struggling with both mental and physical pain, she never lost her ability or passion to be strong for others. Their strength was unwavering and enviable. Twenty-one years was not nearly enough, not just for those who cared for her but for a young woman who was finally excited for what the future held.
