Loraine attended St. Paul grade and high school while growing up in Highland, IL. She was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic church in Belleville, IL. There she was active with the choir, mother’s club and the sodality club. She loved to attend the weekly Althoff Bingo at the CKL of I and going to casinos with her friends.
She was a very active mother as her kids were growing up, involved in all of their school and extracurricular activities including scouts and sports. She served as room mother and coach for many activities. She loved attending all of the sporting events and always had fresh baked treats for everyone. She worked at various jobs when her children were grown including State Farm, and the Heart Center.
She and Don purchased one of the first houses in their neighborhood when they were married in 1958. In the 64 years that she lived there, Loraine created many memories in that home and neighborhood. She was always leading social events in the neighborhood from block parties to welcoming new neighbors. Her neighbors over the years have loved and cherished her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald McCann, parents, Oliver and Sophia Frey, father and mother-in-law Elmer (Mary nee Palmeri), brother Arnold (Delores) Frey, sister Armella (Jerome) Frey, niece Kathy Campbell and nephew Jerry Frey as well as sister-in-law Marguerite (James) Hogg.
Surviving are her son, Jeff (Liz) McCann of O’Fallon, IL; her two daughters, Debbie (Don) Sante of Belleville, IL, and Julie (Michael) Schweiger of Burlington, WI; nine grandchildren, Alex, Lindsey, and Sarah Placke, Maddy and Tucker McCann, Patrick (Megan), Katie, Ben, and Max Travis; two great grandchildren, Rowan and Dawson Travis; and her brother, Maurice (Kay) Frey of Janesville, WI, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She will be deeply missed by all whom she shared her life. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Memorial Hospital. A special thanks to Dr. David O’Neill and Dr. Abdul Jamous who took care of both Don and Loraine over the past many years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Althoff Catholic High School or Our Lady Queen of Peace church.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm on Monday, June 6, 2022 at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, IL and again from 10 to 11 am on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, IL with Rev. Matthew Elie officiating.
Cremation rites will be accorded, followed by inurnment at Valhalla Gardens of Memory at a later date.
