Joel Richardson, 72, passed away in Granite City, IL on August 26, 2023. Joel is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Jo Richardson, and a sister, Annie McDaniel. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Doris Richardson of Edwardsville; step-children, Kathy (John) Schrieber of St. Louis, Jeff (Kisha) Tindall of Shiloh, Greg (Jean) Tindall of Granite City, and Cheryl (Jaime) Delgado of Edwardsville; cousins, Jeanie Stein and Virginia Hyatt; the Weathers family; special friends, Maria Buhr and Robert “RB” Buhr, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Joel was born in Ringgold, GA in 1951. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Marines where he served for 6 years before being honorably discharged. Then, he re-enlisted into the US Navy where he spent 14 years before ultimately retiring.
Most recently he received his Associate of Applied Science degree in Biblical Studies from St. Louis Christian College. As a devout Christian he served as a Deacon at CrossPointe Christian Church in Lebanon, IL. Joel regularly visited nursing homes and hospitals for years every Sunday bringing joy, comfort, and ministering to those who could not attend services in person.
Over the years during the holidays he and Doris enjoyed playing Santa and Mrs. Claus. Together, they brought joy and smiles to children of all ages during both private events, as well as different organization events. In his spare time he enjoyed going to Edwardsville school softball games and cheering them on as an honorary Grandparent.
Friends may visit on Friday, September 1, 2023 from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, 3412 Frank Scott Pkwy W, Belleville, IL 62223. He will then be laid to rest at Valhalla Gardens of Memory with full military honors. Memorials are appreciated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
