He was born on June 28, 1935 in East St. Louis, the son of the late James and Jessie (Cumberland) McKinney.
James married Jean Thomas in Clayton, MO. She preceded him in death on February 14, 2018.
He worked for over 20 years at Granite City Steel. James enjoyed Hunting, Fishing, and spending time outdoors, especially the family fishing tournament every year at Bull Shaols Lake in Arkansas. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by four daughters Michele (Chuck) Niemeier of St. Louis, Christine Hill of Belleville, Brean (Chris) Winterbauer of Belleville, and Megan (Warren) Lambert of Alhambra; twelve grandchildren Lisa, Christopher, Michael, Jamie, Nathan (Trisha), Madison, Alec, Haleigh, Isabella, Connor, Adaline, and Weston; great granddaughter Layla; three sisters Donna (Rick) Roewe-Dieken, Louise (Burt) Bollinger, and Diana Czapla; several nieces nephews and extended family who will miss him dearly.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings Debora Millati-Lehman, Dennis Millati, and Jackie Franey.
Visitation will be held from 3 pm until time of funeral service at 6 pm on Thursday January 17, 2019 at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home in Belleville.
Cremation rites have been accorded and will follow the services.
Private family burial will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association.
