I loved Professor Newhouse!   I was a student at UH Law Center from 1984-87.  He was a professor of mine--and one of the favorites of the entire class- but also was an Assistant Dean at one time . . . with a good sense of humor!   I was President of the Student Bar Association and needed his signature on a document one afternoon.   I knew that his ground floor office at Krost Hall  had lots of full length windows.  I decided to surprise him by climbing into the flower bed outside one of the windows and get his attention by waving the document that needed his signature.  Little did I know, he had a prospective student in the office whose back was to the window.  Dean Newhouse saw me in the flower bed waving the document, started laughing, and motioned for me to come into the office.  By the time the prospective student turned around to see why Dean Newhouse was laughing, I was long gone from the flower bed.   Not sure whether that prospective student enrolled there, but we both laughed about the craziness it must have seemed.  He was a very good professor, but an even better human being.

I would have never gotten into UH Law had it not been for Tom-  We'd worked together on several Faculty/Student Advisory Boards (especially the committee to establish the state-of-the-art Child Care Center)
When my grades weren't enough, I asked for an interview - dressed up like a lawyer- prepared to talk about maturing during my hiatus in Austin.  First thing Tom said when I walked in was "So, have you thrown any bombs lately?"  He was disarmingly charming, and was supportive of we who would use our law degrees for the public good- not just for a monied career. He lived his beliefs. 

Always a gentleman. Always in good humor. Always willing to share his knowledge. Always helping others. He leaves us too soon, but he leaves many wonderful memories and lessons that endure.

I remember Tom Newhouse with sincere gratitude and admiration! Tom was part of my family life as Deacon of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and school where my 3 children attended. He was, later on, a Deacon at St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he baptized two of my granddaughters.  At the University of Houston Law School he was a mentor and Director of the Legal Aid Clinic, teacher and partner in mediation and Conflict Resolution at Harris County Dispute Resolution Center.  He enjoyed participation in the Texas Association of Mediators (TAM) and the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) Conferences.

When he was sick, he took this time with humor and resignation. For example, once I texted him, asking about how he was doing, his response was, “Family good: Me, not so much. Bad legs, bad gut…too old.” Tom and I loved to remember times working as “peacemakers”.   I learned so much from Tom and will always treasure his memory.

Tom had a wonderful sense of humor. He was so sharp and witty.

As a new mediator, he was helpful to me at the Dispute Resolution Center of Harris County, when I had a question about the mediation process. Again, his sense of humor was very obvious even when discussing a serious matter.

The Association of Conflict Resolution - Houston Chapter honored him as one of the 10 mediators in the Houston area for their Lifetime Achievement Award a few years ago. 

May all the good memories of Tom offer you some comfort during this difficult period.

Tom and his wonderful Emma were a great family with cherished friends.  I have many fun memories of parish activities, New Years Game Day parties, and spiritual guidance.  His 7 minute homilies were always special.   May both Tom and Emma rest together  in Eternal Peace.  My sincere condolences to your sons and family.  

I remember seeing both your parents at Jesuit events thru the years. Judging from what's written here, I know you 3 sons were proud of your parents. May they both rest in peace and joy. God bless you all!

Tom was such a special person and he will truly be missed. He was my favorite Deacon.

I met Deacon Tom when I alter served at St. Michael's. I started alter serving in fourth grade, and Deacon Tom and I bonded over my name at first. He always talked about how beautiful and loving his wife Emma was and how he loved his sister Lynn. We talked about our love of family and God and he was always a smiling, calming, and kind presence. Over the years, we got closer, and I eventually started looking at colleges. In my sophomore year of High School, I visited Notre Dame, but before I visited, he told me about the grotto being his favorite place in the whole world and talked joyfully about his time at the university. While there, I got him a pin from the bookstore and gave it to him when I got back to Houston. When the time came to choose a college, I chose Notre Dame, and although I didn't see him often these past few years, I thought of him constantly, and we texted about my time here. When my parents told me about his passing, I knew I had to go to his favorite place and I lit a candle for him. While praying, it gave me peace to remember that he is reunited with his loving wife and sister and God who he served with his whole heart.

Sympathies and prayers to the Newhouse family. Tom was like an uncle to me. He was always lively, full of fun and mischief. I remember he and Emma came with their grandson (Thomas) to my wedding. At the time, Thomas was only 3. I remember how proud they both were of all their grandchildren. It was super sweet.

As one of the many DeVet girls, I count myself lucky my parents and Tom (and Emma) were such good friends. I got to know someone who was kind, generous, and having a great sense of humor and a love of laughter.

May "Uncle" Deacon Tom Newhouse rest in the arms of Jesus forever, Amen. God bless the Newhouse Family. 

So many happy memories of Tom and the whole Newhouse family! He gave my sister her enduring nickname: Pammer-Whammer, although we usually shorten it to Pammer or Aunt Pammer these days. He always had a smile. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Deacon Tom was ordained a Permanent Deacon on May 9, 1987 and was assigned to serve St. Michael the Archangel in 1999.

Tom and Emma Newhouse and their sons Bob, Brian and Michael were my rock during my time at St. Thomas More Parish - the best of friends. I can never fully repay all that their love and friendship have meant to me over the years. I offer Masses and prayers for them in this time of loss. "May the angels lead him into paradise."

Deacon Tom Newhouse – friend of 47 years.  Our friendship began as we shared the challenges and joys of presenting Marriage Encounter weekends.  It progressed and flourished as we shared many aspects of life, its challenges and rewards…the raising of children…transitions such as children leaving, marrying, having children (loved his grandkids!), experiencing victories and defeats, and of mutual friends passing away.  Support of one another in the Catholic Faith, in holding to marriage vows, in deepening love.  Tom was brilliant, funny, edgy, a “limericist” par excellence, articulate and dedicated as a law professor and as a deacon, and Irish through and through, from head to toe, both in ethnicity and in higher education.  Broke our hearts to helplessly watch as the death of Emma and his swarming illnesses took their toll – but he kept his sense of humor and his commitment to friends and family.  May he rest in peace.

Please accept our thoughts and prayers for your beloved father Tom…..he, along with your beautiful mother, have been dear friends of ours through Church and family. Deacon Tom was instrumental in so many ministries and always wore a smile to brighten hearts. Our children, now in their 20’s, served as altar servers/lectors/Eucharistic Ministers, along with ourselves, to assist Tom in any way he needed. His intelligence, gentleness, and love were talents given by God and shared with everyone.
We know Our Heavenly Father welcomed him with loving arms.
Eternal rest grant unto Tom, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he Rest In Peace. Amen.

Ken and I are so sorry to hear of Tom's passing.  What a bright light in the world he was!  He and Emma were among my parents' most long-time friends, and in recent years Tom was such a dear friend to my father in particular.  I loved getting to know Tom better with the passing of time, and will always remember how he embodied love, wisdom, grace, and good humor so effortlessly.  He is already deeply missed.

John and I are so sorry to hear of Tom's passing.  We send our love and prayers to his wonderful sons, Bob, Brian, Michael and their families.  Tom and Emma were dear  friends and they were our sponsor couple in preparation for our marriage. They supported me in my role as youth minister at St. Thomas More for several years and they were just wonderful people.  Tom will be sorely missed by many.  We are certain he is happily reunited to the love of his life, Emma.
