Thomas Conry Newhouse, passed away peacefully, surrounded by love on August 29, 2021, in Bellaire, Texas. Tom was born May 21, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Robert Stewart Newhouse and Myra Conry Newhouse. His family moved around through Cincinnati, Covington Kentucky, Queens and Pelham New York, and Ridgefield Connecticut, before settling in Tulsa in 1948. Tom is a graduate of Tulsa’s Cascia Hall Preparatory School, the University of Notre Dame (BA 1957), University of Tulsa College of Law (JD 1962), and NYU School of Law (LLM 1966). On November 18, 1961, he married the love of his life, Emma McEvoy. In 1966, Tom & Emma moved to Houston, where Tom joined the faculty at the University of Houston Law Center.
Tom was a wonderful husband, dad, and P oppa, as well as a great friend, professor, Deacon, and mentor. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his sister Lynn Anderson. Tom is survived by his three sons: Bob & wife Pegi, Brian, and Michael; his three grandchildren: Isabel, Thomas, and Elizabeth; his sister Nancy Newhouse Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In his 40+ years at UH Law Center, Tom specialized in Labor Law, Family Law, Alternate Dispute Resolution, Mediation, and directing the student-run Legal Aid Clinic. His love was helping his students learn and grow as lawyers and advocates. In 1987, Tom was ordained as a Deacon with the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. He served as a Deacon at St. Thomas More and St Michael the Archangel parishes in Houston, and St. Stephen in Point Blank, Texas. Additionally, Tom served as a chaplain at St. Luke’s and Texas Children’s Hospitals. Deacon Tom had the honor to officiate countless weddings and baptisms of friends, family, and parishioners, which was one of his greatest joys. His seven-minute homilies were a labor of love and resonated with parishioners of all ages and walks of life. He loved his family, his grandkids, the years with Emma and family on Lake Livingston, the NY Times Sunday crossword puzzle, and writing his weekly Deacon’s Corner for the St. Michael’s bulletin. Most importantly, he loved helping others. Tom, Dad, Poppa, Deacon, Professor Newhouse will be forever missed here, but we know he is reunited with his Sweetie, Emma, where they are swing dancing on a heavenly dance floor. We love you, Dad.
