Goldy was one of those rare individuals in this world:  an honest person. He will be missed.

Here's the speech I wrote for my dad's memorial....
My Dad was like a bear. He could be grumpy, gruff, and grouchy. But he could also be sweet, jolly, a lover of pie like Winnie the Pooh Bear. He was a big man with a big heart and a big, deep laugh.

He was a gambler. Loved cards and games and rolling the dice. He loved adventure and exploring. Driving down new streets and routes…. eating never before eaten Foods. Finding the hidden gems. He taught me a love for taking chances and being open to the unknown.

My Dad loved math. We would play endless math games on road trips. We played dominoes, adding up points. I think this endless play is one of the reasons why I feel so at ease with all things math & numbers.

My Dad loved movies. We would go to the movies often when I was a child. His favorite thing was to double dip - see two movies with one ticket. He showed me how to skirt the rules and have fun doing it.

My Dad loved history - mostly battles and wars. But his love of history rubbed off on me and gave me an appreciation for understanding humans' place in an ever changing world - our triumphs and failures.

When I was young, he would get up early every Sunday and make the family pancakes. He had a way of making them taste like crepes that I've never had anywhere else. He passed on to me a love of cooking and eating good food.

He loved coin collecting. Every year from the time I was a kid he would hand out silver dollars for chanukah. My collection of more than 30 coins was stolen at some point and he helped me remake my collection, gathering up coins from almost every year of my life back together again. I’m planning on continuing the annual silver gelt tradition with my kids Arthur and Zev, in honor of their Saba's life to keep his memory alive and to remember the enormous love he had for them. 

As I grew older, my dad and I didn't always have a close relationship. There were times in my life when a month would go by without us speaking. But this last year

Goldie was one of those seemingly rare individuals:  he was extremely intelligent and extremely honest.  I was wanting to talk with him, but I hadn't seen him in a long time. I'm upset to discover that he's passed away.

The Jeep went a great distance but it did not make it back and Steve and friends returned on the train.

I met Steve, “Goldie” in 1970 and shortly after meeting him, a group of us traveled together around Mexico.  He was 22. Our adventures were magical, and much joy and laughter was shared. Young Goldie led life like a performance artist with the day as his stage.  Like many of us young people at that time of transition, ours and the country’s, his life was his art form. He was artistic, thoughtful and imaginative in his approach to the day's tasks.  Boundaries for Steve were just markers of where to begin to explore.   Back in Houston as we grew into adults we remained in touch. I watched him marry Debbie and the birth of their daughter, Flora, who became the center of his universe.  Increasingly the performance artist became the responsible adult.  Over time, our own life paths went in different directions, but we remained in touch.  His marriage to Tracy gave him a much-needed cornerstone to build his life to help support his family and the family company. Although I saw him infrequently in the latter part of our lives, Steve always held a special place in my heart, and he lives there today for as long as I am here.  Liz and I wish our best condolences to Tracy and all those close to Steve, he will be missed by many.
