Mike was born September 27, 1944 in Memphis, Tennessee, son of the late Lloyd J. Cook and Maranell House Cook. Mike's deep love of Texas heritage and culture began in 1953 at the age of 9 years old when his family moved to Victoria, Texas. He graduated from Victoria High School, where he played football, in 1962. He attended Victoria Junior College for 2 years and then attended and graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1967 with a BA in business and furthered his education at the Warton School of Business. He was a devoted patriot in the Texas Army National Guard, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He began his lifelong career as a Certified Financial Planner in 1968 in Houston. He served his clients that were also friends with devotion for 53 years with the major part of his career at Morgan Stanley.
He joined the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1979, serving on various committees including Swine Auction, Corral Club and Speaker’s committees attaining the position of Lifetime Director. He gave so many speeches about the Rodeo that he was famous with youngsters in pre-k all the way to nursing homes. He is also a Director, a pastTreasurer of The Farm and Ranch Club. He was the past president and Paul Harris Fellow of The Memorial-Spring Branch Rotary Club. Mike was a valued member of the Salt Grass Trail, Wagon 7 and Ranchers Rides. He also rode many a trail with The Tejas Vaqueros No Nombre Camp since 1989. In 2019, Mike was elected to the Board of Directors of the world-renowned Texas Ranger Association Foundation, an organization to which he has been a charter patron since 1982.
Mike also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Texas, Louisiana and as far away as Alaska and winning many tournaments in the process.
He is survived by his sister, Judith Kay Magness and her husband David Lynn Magness and their 3 children Price Lloyd Magness, David Matthew Magness and Keron Williamson and 8 grandnieces and grandnephews. He is also survived by his beloved friends Jacinda and her husband Scott Woloson and their 2 sons, Michael and Joseph.
All are invited to a visitation from twelve o'clock until two o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, June 25 in the Family Life Center at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway in Houston. Immediately following a celebration of his life will take place.
Immediately following, all are invited to a reception at the Armadillo Palace, 5015 Kirby Drive in Houston.
