Beloved daughter, sister, aunt and great aunt left us peacefully on June 19, 2024, at age 56.
Mary Beth Wicks was born on October 9, 1967 in Houston, Texas to Moye and Shirley Wicks. She was their fifth child and only daughter. She was affectionately referred to as “Buff” by her four older brothers.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Gladys and Frank Wicks (Mamaw and Papaw), Mary and Ray Kane (Grammy and Gramps), and her uncles and aunts. Richard and Mary Ann Kane and Javier and Muriel Escobar.
Mary Beth is survived by her parents and her brothers Moye (Susan), John (Cathy), Thomas, and Paul (Imelda), nephews Moye Daniel (Jenn), Christopher, and Andrew (Bridgette), niece Sarah, and great-nieces Natalie and Ava Wicks.
As a child Mary Beth was very determined and persistent. Her brothers recollect watching her use a cane pole with a string in Jamaica Beach and being the only one to catch a fish, and her playing in a powderpuff football game while in high school. These qualities helped her learn ballet as a child and teen, become fluent in Spanish and later survive breast cancer.
She attended St. Thomas More Parish School, was a 1986 graduate of St. Agnes Academy and a 1990 graduate of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio where she received a BA in Multinational Studies and Spanish. While in college, Mary Beth spent a semester abroad in Madrid, Spain and was an intern at Frito Lay corporation in Mexico City.
She was an International Patient Coordinator for Medicus International, Food and Beverage Coordinator for the Westin Corporation, and later, a substitute teacher at St. Agnes Academy, her alma mater. Mary Beth held various administrative roles for Kelly Services including one at Pennzoil and another at Foxconn. During her marriage to Jimmy Hines, Mary Beth worked as a private tutor teaching elementary math, reading and Spanish. She was proud to be a member of the Colonial Dames, thanks to the genealogy research of her Aunt Muriel.
Mary Beth will be remembered as someone who was kind and always willing to lend a hand to her many family members and friends. She loved dogs, especially Bailey whom she rescued and who became a beloved family pet. Mary Beth enjoyed dancing, singing, traveling, watching the Astros, and spending time with family and friends.
