June “June Bug” Perry Lentz, of Bellaire, Texas, passed away on April 4, 2024, after a brief illness at the age of 94. Anyone that met June Bug realized that she was a unique soul that always lived her life independently. She is survived by her daughter, Meredith Lentz Foster (and husband John Elton Foster); her grandson, John-Thomas Foster (and wife Robin Foster); and great-grandchildren Hazel Wren Foster and John William Foster. She is also survived by her siblings, Dorsey, Dwan, and Pam. She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas H. Lentz. She is also survived by many cherished neighbors. She truly enjoyed being a “Grand June Bug” to her great-grandchildren and loved to get them books on butterflies, dinosaurs, and adventure.
What June Bug loved most in life were her travels across the globe. In a time before cell phones and the internet, she traveled by herself to every continent. No matter where she went, she always made fast friends and ran into people she knew – including a penguin in Antarctica. Some of the countries she visited are no longer on the map – June Bug witnessed history unfold through her travels.
June Bug always cherished her friendships and would talk often about the people she met along the road of life – especially the friends she made close to home in Bellaire. In all her travels, she would always say there was nothing better than coming home to Houston and getting Tex-Mex with her friends and family. She was an unforgettable presence for those who knew her.
A passionate gardener, June Bug dedicated much of her time to her “jungle” which included the largest (self-proclaimed) butterfly preserve in Bellaire. She was a fierce advocate for Monarchs and would raise caterpillars in her home terrariums. She campaigned for the planting of pollinator plants to everyone and was a friend and contributor of the Houston Natural Science Museum Cockrell Butterfly Center. June Bug loved animals, especially her basenjis, of which she had many over the years.
The family will be hosting a meet and greet celebration of her life on April 10, 2024, at the Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet at 10:30 a.m. A private graveside to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in June Bug’s name can be made to the Houston Museum of Natural Science so that they may continue in their mission of butterfly conservation.
