Dad will always be remembered for his fine Christian leadership, adventurous spirit, and keen sense of humor. 

Dad truly was a friend to all. He taught me that Christian love turns its back on no one. In any group he joined or led, he never let there be an odd man out. He was always the first to show acceptance and compassion to an outcast, and he inspired others to do the same.

It is thanks to Dad, that I have been to 47 of the 50 States, mostly by car; and, in many cases, it was just the two of us. Through this, he inspired my love for travel and exploration. Every trip, every mile of highway, and especially every country road and not-so-short "short-cut" was truly an adventure. All along the way, Dad could point out the historical significance of the area, interesting geological features, or both.

What I suspect most people will remember about Dad though is his sense of humor. He never seemed to care if the masses did not find his jokes funny, as long as the individual to whom the joke was specifically catered cracked a smile. And, they usually did.

Shirley - we have just learned of John's death.  We are so sorry.  Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during these difficult days.  Erma and Ken Axelson

Grandy, 

I will always cherish those times Nelson and I slept over at your place - eating Pizza Hut pizza, watching movies like Star Wars and Indianna Jones, and having adventures in the "jungle" out back - all were intergral to my childhood.  And, of course, I will never forget touring the East Coast with you and getting to see such wonderful things as the Statue of Liberty, the Mayflower, Jamestown, etc. , despite the fact that my head was in my Gameboy 24/7 and I always ran straight to the gift shop.

It isn't all those activities you've done with me that pay tribute to who you are, it is what kind of person I have become because of spending all that time with you that proves what an incredible person you are.  Thanks to you I can remain calm and level-headed in stressful situations. (God knows I didn't get that from Mom!)  And your constant influence has turned me into the kind-natured person I am today.  

Last, but certainly not least, I can't tell you where I'd be today without your sense of humor and corny jokes! (To this day when someone asks, "Do you know what?"  I have to respond, "I know when, is that what's brother?")  While that may not sound like an important trait, it has taught me to laugh at things that would otherwise be infuriating.  It seems like every other joke I say to Angela, she always responds, "Wow, you really are your Grandy!"  All I can do is smile when she says that because I can't think of anyone else I would rather be. 

I love you.  Thank you for all the times you have shared with me and know that part of you is in my very being, making me strive to be the best person I can be.

Dad had such a generous spirit.  He didn't have alot of material wealth, but what he had he shared.  He shared his time with the family, with the community, with his church, and with anyone needing a friend. Dad truly was a friend to all. 

Dad enjoyed sharing his hobbies and passions with the family.  Every outing or family vacation with Dad was an educational experience. I don't think he ever passed an historical marker without reading it first. While my friends' families were going to Disneyland and Six Flags Over Texas, our family vacations consisted of a week of tent camping, bathing in a creek, and using port-a-johns as part of the Texas Archeological Society's Field School - an experience I will always treasure.  As a child many of my Saturdays were spent with Dad hunting for fossils or arrowheads. Sometimes on our weekend drives Dad would pretend we were lost, then we'd turn a bend and there would be some amazing waterfall, or some other amazing find - something he was driving to all along. He liked surprising us that way.  

Dad's wealth may not have been material, but he had a wealth of knowledge that he shared with his family and those who shared his interests.  He touched so many lives.

The greatest gift Dad shared with us was his faith in Jesus Christ. He loved studying scripture and Biblical history.  He loved serving in the church and enjoyed the fellowship. At a time like this, when experiencing a loss so great, I cannot express how grateful I am to Mom and Dad for their constant faithfulness to God and insistance that we attend Sunday worship service as a family each Sunday. Dad taught us to be scholars of the Bible and witnesses of Christ's love.  I am forever grateful for this precious gift.

I consider it a privilege to call myself John Herbert's daughter.

Shirley:  I am so, so sorry for your loss.  Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.

I am so sorry to learn of John's passing.  My deepest condolences to his loving wife Shirley and the rest of his wonderful family.  I first met John and Shirley at a Dallas autograph show in 1990 and I became a customer and friend of his and Shirley's.  He was as honest as the day is long and a great asset to the hobby.  We will all miss him.

It is with great sadness that I could not be there in person to give my final respects to Johnny.  I am glad that Beth, the kids, and I were able to spend time with him a few weeks ago.

I enjoyed Johnny's sense of humor and feel honored to be part of his family.  Johnny's deep faith was/is an inspiration to me. May he rest knowing that he exhibited and imparted a deep faith in our Lord Jesus to Shirley, Dianne, Beth, and John.

My deepest sympathies go out to Shirley, Dianne, Beth, John and the rest of the extended Herbert family as they deal with their and our loss.

I'm so glad I got to spend some time with Grandy a few weeks ago.  We had lots of fun exploring Texas history.  I loved it when he showed me and Ryan his rock & mineral collection.  I will miss him a lot.

Grandy was a great grandfather, had a great sense of humor; and, he will be missed by everyone who knew him.
