Jane Mayers Rowland 95, of Bellaire Texas passed away on January 31, 2012. She was born In Irvington New Jersey on June 18, 1916. Jane graduated from Montclair State College with a Bachelor’s degree in education. There were no jobs available in education at that time.
Shortly before the War, she joined the Civilian Pilot Training Program where she learned to fly Piper Cubs, 2 passenger airplanes.
During the War she worked in Baltimore at the Ballistic Research Lab. It was there she met and married Richards Atwell (Dick) Rowland, from Richmond, Virginia. When the war was over they came to Texas with their two very young children, Beth and John. In Houston they settled in Bellaire where they and many others became part of the oil industry. Jane always remained a Yankee at heart.
Jane was stay at home mom, but she was also very active in the community. She usually ended up as the treasurer of whatever organization she joined. She took her volunteer jobs seriously. Some of her interests include: Bellaire Methodist Church, Choir (alto), Bridge, reading Girl Scouts, Camping, swimming, canoeing, sailing, wild flowers, traveling the world.
When John and Beth went to college she went to work as a math teacher and became the domestic scholarship. She taught at Bellaire High school for four years. She then quit and went back to college and earned a Master’s and Doctorate degree in Education. Then on a dare from a Professor she worked at Texas Southern University for many years until retirement.
Traveling the world with her husband Dick they went every three years to meetings in large cities around the world. After his death in 1985, she travelled to more exotic places like The Galapagos’ Islands, Antarctic, Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, Australia, Egypt, India, China, before the flooding of the Yangtze River, the silk routes of China. Our job was putting them on the planes when you could actually go to the gates and see them depart.
She is preceded in death by husband, Richards A. Rowland, son, John Richards Rowland.
