Floyd John Kowalski , 94, went to be with the Lord, on Friday, September 12, 2014. Floyd, a native Texan, was born in Marlin, Texas on March 31, 1920 to John and Rosie Kowalski and was the seventh of their ten children. He graduated from Marlin High School and served in the US Army from 1941 until October 1945 where he served part of those years in Alaska and the Yukon Territory working on the great Alaskan Highway project. His stories of those years entertained children, grandchildren and friends for the remainder of his life.
After WWII, Floyd moved to Houston and attended the University of Houston where he received his Bachelors of Business degree in 1948. He worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Houston while in college and that is where he met his future wife, Lora Cooper. They married on June 15, 1947 and recently celebrated their 67th anniversary.
Floyd worked for a 37 years as a Credit Manager for the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) from where he retired. His faith in the Lord and helping others was very important to him and Floyd was very active in his parish, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #10995. He also volunteered for the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Francis for many years and only stopped his volunteer work at about age 89 when he could no longer climb stairs and deliver food and other necessities to those in need. He also participated in numerous other parish activities over the years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lora, his four children, all in the Houston area: Donna Kowalski, Michael Kowalski and wife Claudia, Stephen Kowalski and wife Debbie, and Becky Kowalski Stephens and husband Tracy Stephens; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. His beloved grandsons will serve as his pallbearers.
Floyd was a joyful servant and ambassador for God who lived a simple, humble life as a man for others. His greatest legacy is he instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of the Lord and the importance of love of family.
A Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM with a Rosary recited 7:00 PM, Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church at 8100 Roos Rd., Houston, TX 77036.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 18, 2014 at St Francis de Sales Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will be held at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and/or the Knights of Columbus Council # 10995, both organizations at St. Francis de Sales parish, or to St. Francis de Sales church in his memory.
