Elizabeth Bell Hubbart West, 94, died September 9, 2015 at Houston Hospice surrounded by her family. She was born on December 14, 1920 in Danville, Illinois to Curtis Clay Hubbart and Lura Strebel Hubbart. She attended Illinois State Normal University in 1937, and married John William West on June 22, 1941. They began their married life in Carlinville, Illinois where they owned two grocery stores, a supermarket, a gas station, a cab company and the “Spot Café”. They moved to Springfield, Illinois and owned several grocery stores there. They decided to relocate to the warmer climate of Beaumont, Texas where she worked for the Enterprise Newspaper. Next, moving to Orange, Texas where they owned the Azalia Lodges Motel and then onto Waco,Texas where they were House Parents at the Methodist Children’s Home. She later worked for M&M Mars in Waco, before moving to Houston. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, and was president of her Sunday School Class, the Garden Club, and the United Methodist Women’s group. Her greatest love was the work she did with the Food Pantry for over 25 years.
Elizabeth West is preceded in death by her husband, John William West; her parents, Curtis and Lura Hubbart; and her brother, Curtis Hubbart and his wife Pauline. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Tansey; a grandson, Mark Tansey and wife Evelyn; a grandson Alan Tansey and wife Jennifer, all of Houston; a granddaughter, Susan Thomas, of San Antonio; four great-grandchildren, John and Sarah Tansey and Nathan and Isabel Thomas; and numerous family members and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, September 11, from 6-8 p.m. at Earthman Funeral Home in Bellaire. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Earthman Funeral Home in Bellaire with the Rev. Tommy Williams officiating. Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery in Carlinville, Illinois. The family suggests memorials to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, St. Paul’s Food Pantry, or Houston Hospice.
