Dorothy Margaret Zeigfinger of Houston, Texas was born on May 5, 1928 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, daughter of Charles and Kathren (Stein) Garske. Dorothy passed away peacefully at home on April 16, 2024. She studied at Milwaukee State Teachers College. Before graduating she started working with the government at a bank in Wisconsin. She was transferred by the government to work in a Houston bank.
Dorothy met her husband, Harold, at an event at the Jewish Community Center in Houston. They were married in 1955, and spent 64 years together before Harold passed, raising children, celebrating grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She loved sewing and even made matching outfits for her daughter, Cheryl and her best friend, Gail. Dorothy also loved thrift shopping, garage sales and was very resourceful. After her children were grown she worked part-time at grocery stores giving out sample products and talking with customers. She was a member of Beth Israel’s Havurah group. She loved baking. Magic bars, brownies, tunnel of fudge cake, Rum soaked pecans coffee cake, and keugel were some of her favorites. Her favorite vacations were ocean cruises. She always enjoyed speaking with other passengers and making new friends. She took her last cruise with her husband in 2015. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Always available for chauffeur duties and adventures with the last trip in 2017 to New Mexico.
Dorothy was preceded in death by parents, her husband, Harold Zeigfinger, and her brother, George Garske. She is survived by her children Cheryl Lefkowitz and her husband, Marc, Mark Zeigfinger and his wife Corinne, her grandchildren: Adam (Erin) Jalfon, Michelle (Mark) Jimenez, Rachel Jalfon, Emily and Katherine and great grandchildren, Ava, Olivia, and Ezra.
The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers: Adonait, Kokeb, Shitu and Wosene for their devotion and care. Thankful for our hospice nurse and friend, Barbara. For those desiring memorials in Dorothy's memory may be made in lieu of flowers to the charity of your choice.
