Dorothy Louise Cox a longtime resident of Houston, TX went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 10, 2012. Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother was born on September 11, 1923 in Tanglewood, TX. She is preceded in death by her husband, Hylton “Bob” M. Cox and her son Robert H. Cox. She is survived by her daughter Sandra Kessinger, son Randy Cox, son-in-law Hendley Kessinger, daughter-in-law Tina Cox Evans, grandchildren Crystal Smith, Tara Willis, Bobby Cox, and Matthew Cox and great-grandchildren Liberty, Aithyn and Landyn.
Dorothy married Hylton “Bob” Cox on June 15, 1942. They settled in Bay City, TX and started their family in 1943. They moved to Bellaire, TX in 1963. Bob passed away in 1966. Dorothy never remarried and raised her son Randy and daughter Sandra, 12 and 2 years old respectively, on her own. Her son Bobby was a grown man and married at the time of his father’s death.
Dorothy remained in Houston, TX until her passing on June 10, 2012. After her husband’s passing, Dorothy entered the workforce and worked as a Bookkeeper at the Manor Care Sharpview Nursing Home for a number of years before taking a position as a Secretary/Bookkeeper for the Colon & Rectal Clinic where she retired. She spent her retirement years traveling, gardening, and spending time with her family. Dorothy was an avid sports fan who loved her Houston Astros, Oilers, Rockets, and the Texas Aggie football team.
Dorothy developed Alzheimer’s about ten years ago and spent the last six years of her life at Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care who provided her the greatest of care. Although Dorothy did not recognize her family for the past few years, she still showed the strong will she always had. Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother will be truly missed.
A viewing will be held at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Woodlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in memory of Dorothy Cox to either Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services, 6200 North Braeswood Boulevard Houston, TX 77074 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 2242 W. Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030-2008.
