Carleton W. Brown, age 65, of Texas City, passed away July 6, 2017 in Houston after a two year, hard fought battle with cancer. Carleton was the fourth of six children of Dwight and Thelma Brown. He was born September 19, 1951 in Troy, New York. In 1969 Carleton graduated from high school in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. After attending Temple University for three years as a journalism major, he worked in the northeast before moving to Texas. For 21 years he found his career home at the Regulatory Unit of the Army Corps of Engineers in Galveston, retiring in December 2016. At the Corps, Carleton was known for his attention to detail, his wit, his innovative ideas, and the many ways he informed, cheered and attended to the regulatory staff that was like family to him. Carl was extremely well-read, interested in political discourse and social justice, involved in transcendental meditation, and had an open and curious mind with an insatiable appetite for knowledge. We are extremely indebted to the staff of Pathway to Recovery for their wonderful care of Carleton in helping him restore purpose and peace to his life. We are also so appreciative of Carl’s friends and colleagues at the Corps of Engineers for their steadfast support and love over the years and throughout his battle with cancer. We also want to thank the doctors and staff of MD Anderson Cancer Center and Houston Hospice for their compassionate care through all stages of Carl’s journey.
Carleton was preceded in death by his parents and his eldest brother Kevin. He is survived by brother David Brown (Barbara Levin) of Greensboro, NC; Karen Jeffords-Brown of St. Paul, MN; Winston Brown (Sheryl) of Mt. Pleasant, WI, and Barbara Boucher (Marc) of Houston, TX as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and Aunt Marilyn Livingston of Claremont, NH; Uncle Ronald Warren of Green Island, NY; and Aunt Sylvia Blanchard of Ballston Spa, NY.
A Memorial Service will be held for Carleton Saturday August 5, 2017 at Earthman Bellaire Funeral Home, 4525 Bissonnet Street, Bellaire, TX 77401. Visitation will begin at 12:30 PM followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials requested for Pathway to Recovery, 2119 S. Oak Street, LaMarque, TX 77568.
