Filemon Z. Garcia

He is the son of Marcelo Garcia and Juana Zuniga, and is a sibling of twelve brothers and sisters Irene, Rosa,Trinidad, Basilia, Amalia, Hermalina, Belen, Gricelda, Julian, Lorenzo, and Jose Enrique Garcia. He met and married his future wife at the age of 21, Juana Larios from his hometown. With an eye to adventure and creating a better life for themselves, they embarked on a journey to the United States, stopping in Ensenada,Baja California for two years where they had their daughter Martha in 1964, and then their son Julian, followed soon after in 1965. Filemon, Juana and their children arrived in the United States with the help of his sister Amalia in 1966. They settled in Los Angeles and soon their family of four would grow to become a family of six with the birth of two more sons Cesar in 1969 and Alberto in 1980.

Once they settled, life and growth happened steadily. Filemon got a job that would become his career at Canvas Specialty. He had a great work ethic, and ultimately retired after working there for over 30 years. Anyone who knew him, knew he loved his job and never missed a day of work. He was liked and admired there, and grew to form strong friendships like Manuel Perallon who would become more than a friend, he was an adopted son to him and his family. His ability to connect and treat everyone as part of his family was something that everyone would share about him. I remember he would stop by our house in Bell Gardens with all his crew, and they all would be invited to eat and drink, his favorite drink, a really cold beer. From Bell Gardens they moved to San Bernardino where he enjoyed raising roosters, gardening, and gaming with his friends where they all would enjoy their favorite drink (and yes, we mean a cold beer). He was forever the life of the party, charismatic, a jokester, and a true friend.

He would go back to his hometown of Cuautitlan, from time to time, where he was fortunate enough to own acres of land and many cattle he loved spending time on the land. He was the epitome of the spirit of the cowboy, tending to his land and taking care of his cattle. My dad never forgot where he came from and his heart was always settling down and returning to his hometown.

Filemon left us on January 9, 2023. He lived a long life and passed away surrounded by his family at 80 years old. He is survived by his wife, sons and daughter, and also had the pleasure of being part of his grandchildren, Daniel, Oscar W, Oscar G, Christian, Karena, and Isabella, and three great grandchildren's lives. He leaves a hole in our hearts that will never be filled, and although he is not physically here with us, may he watch over us as we continue our life journey without him. May he rest in peace.

Filemón García nació en Cuautitlán, Jalisco el 4 de abril de 1942, es en este pueblo donde vendría a conocer a su esposa y luego viajaría a los Estados Unidos con su familia.

Es hijo de Marcelo García y Juana Zuniga, y hermano de Irene, Rosa, Trinidad, Basilia, Amalia, Hermalina, Belén, Gricelda, Julián, Lorenzo y José Enrique García. Conoció y se casó con su futura esposa a la edad de 21 años, Juana Larios de su mismo pueblo. Con sueños de aventura y a crear una vida mejor para su familia, se embarcaron en un viaje a los Estados Unidos, deteniéndose en Ensenada, Baja California durante dos años, donde tuvieron a su hija Martha en 1964, y luego a su hijo Julián, en 1965. Filemón, Juana y sus hijos llegaron a los Estados Unidos con la ayuda de su hermana Amalia en 1966. Se establecieron en Los Ángeles y pronto su familia de cuatro crecería a ser una familia de seis con el nacimiento de sus dos hijos, César en 1969 y Alberto en 1980.

Una vez que se establecieron, la vida sucedió de manera constante. Filemon consiguió un trabajo que se convertiría en su carrera en Canvas Specialty. Tenía una gran ética de trabajo y finalmente se retiró después de trabajar más de 30 años. Cualquiera que lo conociera, sabía que amaba su trabajo y que nunca perdía un día. Fue querido y admirado, y tuvo fuertes amistades como con Manuel Perallón, quien se convertiría en más que un amigo, era un hijo adoptivo para él y su familia. Su capacidad para conectar y tratar a todos como parte de su familia era algo que todos compartieran sobre él. Recuerdo que pasaba por nuestra casa en Bell Gardens con todo su equipo, y todos estaban invitados a comer y beber su bebida favorita, una cerveza bien fría. De Bell Gardens, se mudaron a San Bernardino, donde disfrutaba criar gallos, la jardinería, y jugar baraja con sus amigos, donde todos disfrutaban de su bebida favorita (y si, otra vez estamos hablando de una cerveza bien fría). Siempre fue el corazón de la fiesta, carismático, bromista y un verdadero amigo.

Regresaba a Cuautitlán, de vez en cuando, donde tenía la suerte de poseer hectáreas de tierra y mucho ganado. El amaba pasar tiempo en la tierra. Era la personificación del espíritu del vaquero, atendiendo su tierra y cuidando su ganado. Mi papá nunca olvidó de dónde vino y su corazón siempre estaba con regresar a su pueblo.

Filemón nos dejó el 9 de enero de 2023. Vivió una larga vida y falleció rodeado de su familia a los 80 años. Le sobreviven su esposa, hijos y también tuvo el placer de ser parte de la vida de sus nietos, Daniel, Oscar G, Oscar W, Christian, Karena e Isabella, y tres bisnietos. Él deja un vacío en nuestros corazones que nunca se llenará, y aunque no estera con nosotros físicamente, que nos cuide mientras continuamos el viaje de nuestra vida sin él. Que descanse en paz.
