On November 2, 2015 Paul Edward Murrell beloved husband of Joan D. Murrell (nee Diepold); devoted father of Greg P. Murrell and his wife Maureen and Tom P. Murrell and his wife Tracy; dear brother of John Murrell and his wife Diane and the late James Murrell and his wife Betty, Norma Brown and her late husband Ralph and Eleanor Younger and her late husband Edwin; cherished grandfather of Josh, David, Abby, Brooke, Jacob, Sarah and the late Kaley and Kevin; loving son of the late Howard and Frances Murrell.
Paul was a graduate of Wicomico High School in 1953. Out of high school Paul became a plumber in the Salisbury area. He then entered the Army and served proudly for 2 years. When he returned from military service he enrolled at Salisbury Teachers College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1962. He went on to earn his Masters of Education and Doctor of Education degrees from Western Maryland College and Nova Southeastern University, respectively.
Paul was a teacher for 5 years at Elmwood Elementary School and an Assistant Principal at Rosedale Elementary School for 2 years. He served as a Principal in Baltimore County Elementary Schools for 35 years. He was one of the most respected school administrators in Baltimore County. He spent each day striving to be the best he could be and he expected the same from his faculty and students. Paul was president of the Association of Elementary School Administrators.
Paul loved his job, and other than his family, his two real passions were sports and barbershop music. In his youth Paul spent countless hours on the baseball diamond, basketball court and football field. Paul had endless stories about these times. Paul’s love for sports continued for the rest of his life. He was very active coaching youth sports and every kid he coached was special to him. Once his sons moved onto high school and college he became their teams #1 Fan.
Paul loved singing barbershop music. He was an active member of the Chorus of the Chesapeake. Paul was a 3 time President of the Chorus of the Chesapeake, including when they were the 1971 International Champions. He earned the Master Barbershopper Award in 2008 and Barbershopper of the Year in 2011. Paul was still active in a local Barbershop quartet until his passing.
Relatives and friends may gather at Schimunek Funeral Home of Bel Air, Inc. 610 W. MacPhail Rd. Bel Air, MD 21014 on Monday November 9, 2015 3-5 and 7-9. Memorial Service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church 4135 Norrisville Rd. White Hall, MD 21161 on Tuesday November 10, at 11AM.
