On Thursday, February 15th, Hardin F. Appleby, known as Fred to all, passed away at the age of 91 years. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Eleanor, children Kathy ( Cal Lassetter), Susan (Bob Dewlin), Tim (Beth Appleby), his grandchildren Lauren, Matt, Anna Casey, Patrick, Alison, and a brother Harry. Fred was predeceased by his parents Otto and Anna Casey Appleby, three sisters and a brother.
Fred, a graduate of Baltimore City College, University of Maryland, Towson University, and Johns Hopkins, became a physical education teacher, coach and Coordinator of Athletics in Baltimore City Public Schools. First and foremost was his love for coaching swimming, track, soccer and baseball and bringing notoriety to Polytechnic with his many MSA championships. He was an avid athlete and while running track at City College, befriended Jimmy Carter as they competed. Fred opened the first sports medicine clinic with his close friends Dr. Joe Martire and Dr. Bill Howard at Union Memorial. On 2013, the natatorium at Polytechnic was named after Fred for his services.
He has had many roles and titles throughout his life: World War II vet in the Navy, “mayor” of Ocean Pines, grant writer for the yacht club and member of the Romeos.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W. MacPhail Road, Bel Air, on Saturday, February 24, from 9:00-10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mark Catholic Church at 11:00 AM, 2407 Laurel Brook Road in Fallston. Interment Private.
