Mr. Whittaker was born September 16, 1943 in Duluth, Minn. to James and Marion Whittaker. He is survived by siblings Susan Saarem (Matt), Steve Whittaker (Aletta), Judy Westin (Larry), and Bill Whittaker (Karen). Warren was the beloved husband of Susan Ann Whittaker, married in 1984. He will be deeply missed also by his son Tim Whittaker of Greenwood; stepchildren Michelle Crowe (Tom) and Major Nicholas Lantrip, USAF; former daughter-in-law Kim Whittaker; six grandchildren, including Zachary Whittaker, Madalyn, Meredith and Carver Crowe; sister-in-law Nancy Roy; former wife Judy Whittaker, and 15 nieces and nephews. Warren is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Corey James Whittaker.
Warren grew up on a dairy farm, and in 1961 graduated from Silver Bay High School near Duluth Minn., then studied at the University of Minnesota. His career with Cordon Bleu Cookware brought him to Indianapolis in 1966. In 1975 he embarked on his nearly four-decade career with State Farm Insurance, which brought him to Beech Grove in 1992. His impact on our community included founding membership in the Beech Grove Chamber of Commerce, Beech Grove Education Foundation and long-time membership in multiple civic organizations. His spirit and vision led plans for revitalization and growth for the town, which named Warren and Susan Beech Grove Citizens of the Year.
Warren was especially proud of his State Farm accomplishments, including President’s Club, Crystal Excellence, Ambassador Traveler, Million Dollar Round Table, as well as his 2002 NAIFA recognition as Indiana Agent of the Year.
Warren was known for his energetic approach to life, love of all sports – especially golf, and his commitment to faith, charity and civic causes. In recent years, Warren enjoyed traveling in his motorhome and entertaining friends in his second home in Goodyear, AZ. Warren and Susan attended First Christian Church of Beech Grove.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at The Atrium, located at 3143 E. Thompson Rd., Indianapolis, 46227. Family and friends may visit from 3 to 5pm, with a service at 5pm. After the service we invite you to join us for food and fellowship till 8pm. In lieu of flowers, tax-free contributions to the Warren Whittaker Memorial Scholarship can be made to the Beech Grove Education Foundation (bgedfoundation.org).
