He was born July 17, 1939 at Crab Orchard, WV to the late Ethel J. Covey Hutchens and the late Melvin E. Hutchens.
He was a 1958 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Beckley College. His most recent employment was with Maben Energy until its closing then retiring in 2009 from Brake Supply Company. He was a devoted Christian and a long-time member of Calloway Heights Baptist Church serving as Music Coordinator, playing the piano and organ, directed the choir, served as trustee and many committees over the 40 years. He played the piano and sang with several gospel groups. He loved Southern Gospel music, choir or group. After moving to Tennessee he was a member of Springview Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Violet, Norma Jean, and Geraldine, and Carolyn; brothers, Melvin Jr, Bill, and David.
He is survived by one sister, Mary Lou Crum and husband, Donald along with many nieces and nephews. He had a close relationship with niece, Connie Bojnoswki and nephew, Rick Hutchens, along with a special friend, Charlotte Poole and good friend, Jim Tanner.
Funeral Services will be 2:00PM January 27, 2024 at Calloway Heights Baptist Church, Beckley with Brother Kermit Manning officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00PM until time of the service. Following the services Richard will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
