Mohammed Khalid Hasan MD

Dr. Mohammad Khalid Hasan peacefully passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at his home in Beckley, West Virginia. He was 74. He was beloved and respected by his family, friends, and colleagues for a life defined by deep intelligence, compassion and integrity. His career and devotion to his patients and community reflected a passion for caring and helping others. He was born on December 16, 1942, in Alahabad, India. Following in the family tradition, he became a fourth-generation physician. He graduated from Motilal Nehru Medical College in 1967 and completed his psychiatry residency program at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. While there, he met his wife, Dr. Surayia Hasan, and together, they moved to southern West Virginia, which became home. In addition to practicing general Psychiatry, he was also boarded in the sub-specialties of Addiction Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry. He established his private practice, Raleigh Psychiatric Services, in 1977 and continued in this practice throughout his life. He served on numerous state and national committees and took on many leadership positions to help improve healthcare in southern West Virginia. He was an avid teacher and remained active in medical education for all levels of professional development. His involvement in patient care, local politics and public health made a significant and lasting impact in this region. Dr. Hasan was known for his unique ability to capture a room with his keen wit and his charismatic personality. He never missed an opportunity to share his sense of humor and jokes with others, and his trademark sly smile was contagious. Beneath all of this, he had an abundantly generous spirit. He and Surayia made family the center of their lives. His love of medicine was surpassed only by that of his devotion to his family. He was a loving, inspiring and dedicated father and husband. Together, they instilled in their children their work ethic, desire for lifelong learning and their passion to help others. His children followed in the family tradition and with their father’s encouragement, established careers in medicine. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Surayia Hasan; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Ayesha Hasan and Craig Thompson; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Omar Hasan and Dr. Irene Wasylyk; daughter, Dr. Rabiya Hasan; and beloved grandchildren, Dalya, Anya, Kamran, and Aalia Hasan. As his beloved granddaughters wisely said, “he took care of all of us.” His family will cherish his memory and strive to carry on his legacy of integrity, philanthropic leadership, and compassion for others.
