Mathew Cole lived life with a laid-back, “easy does it” spirit that left an unforgettable impression on everyone who knew him. Born with music in his soul and love in his heart, he was a man who made the most out of what he had and found joy in the simplest moments — a song, a laugh, a sunrise.
A 1995 graduate of Shady Spring High School, Mathew believed from a young age that he was destined to be a killer guitarist in the coolest rock band. While that dream evolved, it led him to a new rhythm — spinning tracks as one of the coolest DJs around. And that’s exactly how he met the love of his life, Ashley Walker Cole. Their wild, love-filled years together turned into something even greater when they became parents to three incredible children: Gracee Mae, Olivia Danielle, and Benjamin Alexander. They became the soundtrack to his life, bringing nonstop laughter and love.
Mathew spent many years working as a route driver for Heiner’s Bakery before his cancer diagnosis. He loved vacationing at the beach, especially watching the sunrise over New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Whether he was strumming his guitar, joking around with his kids, or just soaking up time with family, Mathew was happiest in the presence of those he loved most. And let’s not forget his loyal best buddy, Enzo — the pup who never let him rest without a round of play and gave him unconditional love.
Mathew was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Lacy Franklin Cole and Daphine Miller Cole, step-grandmother Mary June Cole, uncles Leal Gene Cole and Richard Lee Cole, and Claudene Gay Worley, who loved Mathew as her own grandson, along with many dear friends gone too soon.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Ashley; their three children, Gracee, Olivia, and Benjamin; his mother, Mildred Ann Cole; his special Aunt Doris Fuller (John Fuller); Uncle David Withrow; mother-in-law Kelli Letart (Elliot Letart); father-in-law Brian Walker (Armetta Walker); and brother-in-law Aaron Walker.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their compassionate care and unwavering support during Mathew’s final weeks.
A celebration of Mathew’s life will be held on Saturday, April 12th, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM and a service at 2:00 PM. Mathew would want to be remembered as a great father, a lover of music, and someone who found beauty in life’s everyday rhythms. His story is one of love, laughter, and legacy — a song that will play on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face towards you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
