Mary Athelene “Mac” Cook Stewart, 91 years of age, formerly of Beckley, passed away in her sleep on Saturday, February 15th, 2020 at 6:00 am. Born on July 9th, 1928 in Key Rock, WV, she was the fourth of 13 children born to Lewis Shelton and Zura Jane Farley Cook.
Athelene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Stewart; her son, Alan Stewart; two sisters, Maxine Cook and Karen Cook Woody; and four brothers, Dale, Billy, Charles and Larry Cook.
She is survived by her two daughters, Pam Stewart Jenkins and her husband, Robert of Holly Hill, SC, Dreama Stewart Hinebaugh and her husband, Darrell of Kingwood, WV, where Athelene made her home for several years; her seven grandchildren, Robert Stewart of San Francisco, CA, Kimberly Hoffman of Tunnelton, WV, Richard Harper of Tunnelton, WV, LeAnne Reynolds of Columbia, SC, Holly Bisig of Monroe, GA, Billy Burdiss of Richmond, VA and Alisha Roy of Florida; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Zoerb of Williamsburg, VA, Judy “Pug” McGraw of Williamsburg, VA and Gail Wallen of Mullens, WV; and three brothers, Ralph Cook of Joppa, MD, Alvin Cook of San Antonio, TX and Darrell Cook of Arden, SC.
Athelene raised her children in Mullens. Her hobbies were square dancing, bowling, reading, and beating her family in Scrabble and card games. She was a Christian and formerly attended Calloway Heights Baptist Church in Beckley.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 22, 2020 in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Home with her good friend and former neighbor, Reverend Gilbert “Jr” Dodson officiating. Friends may call from 1:00-2:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial will follow the services in the Tower Garden of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
