Born April 20, 1942 in Greenbrier County, WV she was a daughter of the late Josiah L. Lilly and the late Mary N. Plumley Lilly.
MJ was an active volunteer with the Telephone Pioneers in various activities; she was very social and outgoing she never met a stranger and everyone that met her loved her. She loved macramé, basket making, leatherwork, caning, traveling across the US, crossword puzzles, and crypto quotes; she was an avid lover of all things Native American, and loved Richard Petty. When her health permitted, she loved to attend her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was a former member of the Beckley Shag Club and was on the Bowling League with the Telephone Pioneers.
MJ retired from Bell Atlantic Phone Company following 23 years of dedicated service, holding various positions from Telephone Operator to Installer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 sons-in-law, Gary Wayne Evans and Curtis McCall.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sister and best friend, Cora Pack of Cool Ridge; two daughters, Belinda Booth and husband, Gary of Grandview and Toni McCall of Cool Ridge; grandchildren, Tyler Evans of Beckley, Sydni Evans of Eccles, Dylan McCall, Rylie McCall and Cash McCall all of Cool Ridge; great grandchild, Sloan Lester of Eccles; special best friend, Mary Ellen Morgan of Lewisburg; extended family and numerous friends, some of which friendships began during childhood.
A service to celebrate the life of Mary Jo “MJ” Matherly will be held 1:00PM Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley.
Following the service at the funeral home, a private committal service will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations of sympathy be made in her honor to Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley WV 25801.
