Evelyn Christian Richards, a resident of Sophia, passed away on the evening of August 3rd, 2014, at Genesis Health Care, Hill Top Center after a long illness. Evelyn was born May 13, 1933 in McAlpin to the parents of Jeffrey Roosevelt Morris and Mary Lorena (Doss) Morris. Evelyn had 3 brothers, Harry, Robert, Donald (all deceased) and 3 sisters, Frances, Rosemary, (all deceased) and Dorothy (Dottie) whom lives in Maryland. Evelyn attended Mark Twain Elementary and High School and later married her husband, the late Rev. Edgar Roy Richards on November 23, 1950 in Crab Orchard WV and enjoyed a life together of 28 years until Edgar was killed in a coal mining accident at Slab Fork on November 29, 1978. Evelyn and Edgar raised 4 children, Marsha Gail Brooks, (deceased,); Michael Roy Richards of Kentucky, Jeffrey Lynn Richards of Florida, and Michael Roy Richards II of Sophia. Left to share the memories of Evelyn besides her children are the husbands, wives and grandchildren. Marsha’s Husband Roy and grandson Jonathan Brooks of Midway, Michael’s wife Ester and grandsons Larry, Chris, and Josh. Jeffrey’s wife Marlitt (Rachelle) and STEP-grandson Matthew, Michael II wife Monica and granddaughter Kiera Nicole. Also left to cherish her memory are 8 great grandchildren, and friends from all families, churches and the Hill Top Nursing Center. Evelyn was a devoted Christian and a lady of Faith. She grew to know and love the Lord and brought her helping hands to many churches that her husband attended and preached. Two churches she spent many hours attending was the Manor Free Will Baptist Church where Edgar was the pastor and Sophia Freewill Baptist Church where she also attended after Edgar’s death until she was not able to travel. She later became a resident at Grey Stone Assisted Living Facility and then finally residing at the Hill Top Nursing Center in Oak Hill. Evelyn was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend to those who knew her. She loved her coffee and hazelnut creamer, chocolate and peanut butter fudge and the taste of an ice cold Coke. Her favorite restaurant was Bob Evans and her favorite color is Pink. Evelyn loved her friends and would do anything for anyone. She had a heart of Gold and a love larger than life itself and will be extremely missed by her immediate family. Evelyn is now singing and rejoining her husband Edgar after 36 years being apart along with her daughter Marsha, parents, brothers and sisters. Evelyn will be laid to rest in her pink casket for viewing on Saturday, Aug 9th, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Sophia from 700pm to 900pm. Friends of Evelyn and the family may come and spend time with her and the family. The Funeral services are Aug 10th at 100 pm with Rev. Robert Carter of the Sophia Free Will Baptist Church performing the services. The Pallbearers carrying Evelyn to her resting place will be: Jeffrey Richards, Michael Richards II, Greg Morris, Ray Ara, Greg Brown, and Nick Chandler.
