Eugenia Christine “June” Halsey Baldwin, age 97, of Nimitz WV went Home to be with her Beloved Lord May 22, 2020 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV. Mrs. Baldwin was born April 12, 1923 at Bowers Ridge in Wyoming County, now the site of Twin Falls State Park. She was the widow of Ray M. Baldwin her husband of 43 years who died March 9, 1983. Mr. Baldwin was a decorated disabled WW2 veteran and her childhood love.
June was one of 12 children of General Lee and Alice Halsey. Her only surviving sibling is her youngest sister, Phyllis Halsey Hightower of Roanoke Virginia. She is also survived by daughters, Sandra Baldwin Alston of Seattle, Hilda Baldwin Kennedy of Pipestem, Sheila Ware of Knoxville and son, Byron Baldwin of Nimitz. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Drema June Baldwin and Alice Meadows Gore.
June became a Christian at a young age, 13 years, at Sweet Home Community Church near Maben. She became a true evangelist during her years with her husband while living across from Ghent Freewill Church. She directed a large youth choir there, taught young adult classes and was busy filling singing engagements with The Hatcher Quartet for whom her strong alto voice was well known. Earl Hatcher led the group with Esau Cook at tenor and her husband Ray Baldwin at bass. Earl Hatcher taught shape note singing at the church and many many new converts to Christ were seen at this amazing revival came to Ghent WV. June and Ray later moved to Lerona and then Nimitz WV where she was active in Nimitz Missionary Church until failing health prevented her attending services.
June loved traveling with her oldest daughter Sandra to Holy Land sites the West Coast and Canada. She worked at Mingo County Fire Tower and later Flat Top Tower fearless to climb those high towers and accurately pinpoint fires for the WV Conservation Service. She worked at Pinecrest Tuberculosis Sanitarium again fearlessly. She loved reading, Tozier and Spurgeon, her favorites and read constantly right up to her hospitalization. June was a truly beautiful lady who loved her Lord, her family and winning souls to Christ. Her hobby of gardening and flowers was legend.
Friends may visit with the family at 11:00 AM Friday May 29, 2020 and a Homegoing Service will be held at 12:00 PM at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Hannah, Pastor Nimitz Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. She will rest beside her loving husband, Ray Baldwin at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. A fellowship meal will be hosted by granddaughter, Melissa Cole and family at their home in Athens, WV.
