Curtis Leslie Daugherty of Bradley, West Virginia, passed peacefully in his sleep at the age of 64 on November 17, 2020, at the VA Hospital in Beckley. At his side was his much beloved and devoted daughter, Amy.
Curtis was born on November 26, 1955, in Willis Branch, West Virginia, to Shelby Ewing (Daugherty) Norkevitz and Curtis Daugherty, Sr, who passed in 1960. Curtis spent his early years growing up in West Virginia and moved with his family to Indiana in 1965. His family returned to West Virginia when Curtis was in high school, and there was never any doubt that West Virginia was where he belonged. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, sports he enjoyed, especially with his children and his younger brother. Curtis loved his West Virginia Mountaineers! He served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam Era. He has three nephews and a niece who appreciate that Curtis introduced two of his Navy buddies (both called Jerry) to two of his sisters. After he left the Navy, his two younger sisters were left to find love on their own. Curtis was a coal miner and was a member of the security team for the then president of the UMWA, Richard Trumka. He was an accomplished karate instructor, several of his students participated in international competitions. Curtis had a passion for protecting people and ensuring their well-being. He served as a police officer for the City of Mount Hope, the City of Sophia, and Chief of Police for Pax for a number of years. As a licensed securities agent, he found comfort in knowing he protected the financial well-being of people during difficult times in their lives and in their retirement years. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Curtis will always remember him for his wonderful sense of humor and quick wit.
Curtis will be lovingly remembered by his three children, Shane Daugherty and Amy Daugherty-Mills (Fredric), both of Beaver and Braxton Daugherty (Autumn) of Pax, his grandsons, Tristan, Ian and Samuel Blanchard, Josh and Logan Daugherty, and his granddaughters, Stephanie, Paris and Raelynn Daugherty, and Katelyn and Kelly Mills. He also leaves behind his beloved mother, Shelby Ewing (Daugherty) Norkevitz, of Beckley, four sisters and one brother, Debra Daugherty-Guest (Gerald, “Jerry”, deceased), of Pinopolis, South Carolina, Janice Daugherty-Head (Gerard, “Jerry”), Tammy Daugherty-Smith (Godfrey, “Rick”) of Prosperity, Joey Norkevitz (Cassie), of Pax, and Kym Norkevitz-Cox (Richard) of Beckley. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Norkevitz, his grandparents, Ferdie and Sarah Ewing, and Russell and Bessie Daugherty, and his brother-in-law, Jerry Guest. Curtis will also be greatly missed by his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who were fortunate enough to call him Uncle Curt or “Uncle Papaw".
Services to celebrate his life will be held 2:00PM at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor James Johnson officiating with inurnment to follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may gather with the family from 1:00PM until 2:00PM at Blue Ridge Funeral Home.
