Born on February 13, 1925, in Willis Branch, WV, he was the son of the late William Thomas Saunders and Nancy Leona Saunders. Calvin graduated from Mark Twain High School and furthered his education at Beckley College.
A proud Marine during World War II, Calvin served his country with honor and dedication. Following his military service, he embarked on a diverse career, initially working in the coal mines of West Virginia. He later managed and owned CHED’S Department Stores and worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways. After moving to Little River, SC, in 1988 with his wife, Tommie Saunders, he worked at Indigo Farms and Eastport Golf Course.
Calvin was a devout Christian, actively involved in his community as a member of the Princeton Chamber of Commerce, a Mason, a Rotarian, and an advocate for the Salvation Army and Beckley Childcare Center. He cherished time with his family and was a passionate fan of WVU football. Calvin was also dedicated to feeding the hungry, annually serving Thanksgiving dinners to those in need. He was honored in 1976 as Layman of the year by the WV Methodist Annual Conference. Calvin also received the Quilt of Valor in 2023.
Calvin is survived by his son, Rodney Saunders (Sharon) of Florissant, CO; daughter, Pamela Saunders Elmore of Little River, SC; four grandchildren Andrea Murtiff, Bruce Saunders, Chad Saunders, and Tiffany Moxley (Gary); and five great-grandchildren, Kelsey Murtiff, Brianne and Michael Moxley, Cameron Saunders, and Kylie Saunders. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tommie Saunders; his ten brothers and sisters; and great-grandson, Ryan Nicholas Murtiff.
Graveside services with military honors will be held on July 6, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in the Garden of the Good Shepherd, Beckley, WV. The services will be conducted by Bob Lohr. Respecting Calvin’s wishes NO EULOGIES, reflecting his humble nature.
